Mission – Why we exist and why we need you

Geothermal energy is the most abundant renewable energy source in the world. There is 2,300 times more energy in geothermal heat in the ground than in oil, gas, coal, and methane combined. However, historically it’s been hard to find and expensive to develop. At Zanskar, we’re using better technology to find and develop new geothermal resources in order to make geothermal a cheap and vital contributor to a carbon-free electrical grid. We are revolutionizing the exploration process, setting new industry standards for discovery rates and finding new prospects at an unprecedented scale. To reduce risk and improve outcomes, we rely on novel data science and machine learning.

The Data Scientist will improve the geochemical data ecosystem at Zanskar, including automating steps of the data ingestion workflow, building data pipelines where needed, designing visual data displays, and developing machine learning models leveraging geochemical data to uncover hidden geothermal systems and drive real-world exploration decisions. A successful candidate will be a hands-on contributor, an experienced innovator, and an enthusiastic learner willing to broaden their skillset. Strong communication skills are essential, as this role requires close collaboration with research, engineering, geoscience, land, and field teams. Startup experience is a plus.

Competencies – What we’re looking for

• 5+ years professional experience in data science, geochemistry, or chemistry, including graduate level work experience.

• Proven technical skills:

  • Proven experience applying data science in the domains of geochemistry, chemistry, physics, remote sensing, or spectroscopy

  • Proven ability to find innovative solutions to mathematically and scientifically complex problems under ambiguity

  • Expertise in modern machine learning and statistics, including supervised and unsupervised methods

  • Fluency in Python. (Familiarity with SQL, GitHub, Docker, and cloud environments is a plus.)

  • Ability to work closely and collaboratively with engineers, domain experts, and non-technical stakeholders
