Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.

The Simulation team at Waymo is a diverse, innovative, and collaborative group of software and ML engineers and data scientists. We design and build an industry-leading simulation solution with advanced ML algorithms that measures and boosts the performance of the Waymo Driver. Some of our team's work has been featured in the Waymo blog ("Simulation City"), with more papers and videos to come. We're seeking a curious and experienced Tech Lead Manager to accelerate the tech development and growth of Waymo.

This role will be a hybrid of in-office and work from home.

In this role you'll:

  • Lead a world-class R&D team on building ML-driven simulation solutions in order to accelerate Waymo's growth;
  • Apply deep domain expertise in Machine Learning (especially Generative AI), Computer Vision, and/or Computer Graphics to push simulation realism and autonomous driving to the next level;
  • Drive the whole lifecycle of tech innovation, from prototypes to productization into large-scale simulation and data processing systems;
  • Grow and manage high-caliber ML & Software Engineers in an exciting, fast-paced, diverse environment.

At a minimum, we'd like you to have:

  • M.S. in Computer Science (or related fields) + 10 years working experience, or a Ph.D. in Computer Science (or related fields) + 7 years working experience;
  • Academic background and industrial experience in one or more related fields: Machine Learning, Computer Vision / Perception, Computer Graphics & Rendering;
  • 5+ years experience in team leadership and people management.

It's preferred if you have:

  • 3+ years experience in simulation, autonomous driving, and robotics;
  • Direct experience in Generative AI, including multi-modal foundation models and Diffusion models.
