Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.

Software Engineering builds the brains of Waymo's fully autonomous driving technology. Our software allows the Waymo Driver to perceive the world around it, make the right decision for every situation, and deliver people safely to their destinations. We think deeply and solve complex technical challenges in areas like robotics, perception, decision-making and deep learning, while collaborating with hardware and systems engineers. If you're a software engineer or researcher who's curious and passionate about Level 4 autonomous driving, we'd like to meet you.

The Waymo Logs Data Acquisition team owns the infrastructure for collecting, selecting, and ingesting the data from the autonomous vehicles into the cloud.

This role will be hybrid in-office and work from home reporting to a Senior Manager.

In this role you'll:

  • Onboard logging collection infrastructure, including data formats, APIs, and libraries.
  • Data ingestion pipeline, including uploader modules over LTE/Wifi/wired connections, temporary storage, and post-upload data processing infrastructure.
  • Offboard components that facilitate onboard data collection and ingestion, including quotas, sampling, and prioritized upload requests.
  • Strategy and onboard+offboard infrastructure that maximizes the value of the limited data collected in the face of multiple requirements, physical and budgetary constraints, safety and regulatory requirements. This includes application of novel statistical sampling methods and ML.
  • Achieving operational readiness to scale #miles driven by orders of magnitude, including reliability improvements and elimination of overheads that scale linearly with miles.

Day-to-day activities and responsibilities may include:

  • Lead and manage a team of engineers responsible for developing Waymo Logs & Data Acquisition infrastructure, align with strategy, provide mentorship and career growth opportunities.
  • Work in close relationships with partners and stakeholders across Waymo (Simulation, Planner, Perception, Analysis, Release Eval, Onboard Infra, Mapping, Ops, Hardware, Depot Infra, Legal, Product) to build joint strategy and roadmaps.
  • Understand and improve the behavior of production systems, including instrumentation, bug fixes, provisioning, and reliability improvements.
  • Improve the automation, code health, technical debt and simplify the system.
  • Brainstorm, design and build new infrastructure features.
  • Provide support for partners and clients.

At a minimum, we'd like you to have:

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Experience in a people management and team leadership role.
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems.
  • Proven track record of driving collaboration effectively across organizational boundaries.
