Overview:

Unacast is seeking a hands-on Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to lead our security strategy and execution. As our CISO, you’ll define and implement the vision and strategy for securing our company’s data, technology infrastructure, and cloud environments. This role requires a balance of strategic vision, technical expertise, and day-to-day security operations. You’ll collaborate closely with the leadership and technical teams to ensure the security and integrity of our cloud-based infrastructure and services, while also acting as the voice of Unacast’s security practices to internal stakeholders and external customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define, implement, and oversee security strategies for Unacast’s data, systems and cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS and GCP) to safeguard against potential threats, ensure regulatory compliance, and align with industry best practices.
  • Regularly assess potential vulnerabilities through structured risk assessments, penetration testing, and audits to ensure compliance with security standards.
  • Continuously monitor the cloud threat landscape, staying informed of evolving threats, regulatory changes, and industry trends, while updating security policies and procedures to enhance the security framework and address emerging risks.
  • Proactively monitor security systems and investigate potential incidents, designing effective response protocols and leading swift mitigation strategies to address and resolve security breaches and safeguard assets.
  • Manage and respond to cloud security incidents and breaches, ensuring timely resolution and minimal disruption.
  • Collaborates with Chief Technology Officer (CTO), engineering and other internal teams to integrate security best practices into cloud architecture, product development, and infrastructure.
  • Work closely with the Chief Privacy Officer (CPO) to ensure that data privacy and security strategies are aligned, protecting personal and sensitive data across all systems.
  • Lead and drive the process for achieving and maintaining ISO 27001 certification, ensuring alignment with global security standards and best practices.
  • Deploy and oversee critical security technologies, including firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and access controls, while also establishing device-level malware and antivirus standards to safeguard both physical endpoints and virtual networks in cloud environments.
  • Represent the company as the primary security contact for customers, addressing inquiries, participating in security reviews, and supporting RFPs in collaboration with our sales and customer success teams.
  • Document and maintain security policies, including the Unacast Security Handbook, ensure they are aligned with evolving standards and communicated to relevant stakeholders.
  • Oversee security awareness training programs to foster a culture of security vigilance among employees, and develop cloud training workshops for engineering teams.
  • Report on security metrics, incidents, and initiatives to the executive team and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years in a senior security role, with a proven history of implementing security strategies and frameworks.
  • One or more relevant industry certifications such as CISSP, CCSP, CISM, CISA, or AWS Security Specialty.
  • Expertise in relevant security regulations, laws, and standards, with an in-depth understanding of data protection, cybersecurity best practices, and Continuity of Operations Planning (COOP) and Disaster Recovery Planning.
  • Deep technical expertise in securing AWS & GCP cloud environments, including knowledge of cloud-native security tools, cloud firewalls, encryption, and identity management.
  • Expertise in security frameworks, standards and best practices, including hands-on experience with incident response, risk assessment, penetration testing, and security audits.
  • Experience with achieving and maintaining ISO 27001 certification, SOC 2, or similar standards.
  • Ability to balance high-level strategic thinking with hands-on implementation of security measures.
  • A strategic thinker with an analytical mindset, capable of assessing complex security challenges and developing effective solutions.
  • Awareness of emerging security threats, trends, and new technologies impacting the field.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain security concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Team player with a strong business mindset, playing a critical role in establishing credibility and building trust with customers to drive business outcomes.
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-growth environment, balancing multiple priorities and adjusting quickly to business needs.

Other Info

This is a remote position that will require periodic meetups at our office in Ashburn, VA and/or occasional travel. Preference for candidates who reside in the Washington DC metro area (DC, MD or VA). We offer competitive salaries and benefits and unlimited PTO. The typical base salary range for this role is $190,000 to $240,000. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, job level, internal equity, and budget. Exact salary offers will be determined by factors such as the candidate's skills, qualifications, experience and geographic location.
