About the Role

Uber is looking for an Engineering Manager II to lead teams within our Mobility Matching & Segmentation organization. You will own the technical strategy and execution for ML-powered systems that determine how marketplace segmentation drives differentiated experiences across products like UberX, Wait & Save, Priority, Comfort, etc. Your work will directly shape the real-time decision-making engine at the heart of Uber's marketplace, impacting millions of trips daily.

You will lead a high-caliber team of engineers working across ML modeling, high-throughput serving, and optimization systems. You will set the technical direction and partner closely with Science, Product, and Operations to deliver on a roadmap that balances immediate business impact with long-term platform scalability.

What the Candidate Will Need / Bonus Points

  • Strategic Leadership: Define and execute the technical roadmap for the Marketplace Segmentation, ensuring alignment with Uber’s broader Marketplace strategy and company-wide goals.
  • People Management & Growth: Lead and scale a high-performing team of engineers. You will be responsible for hiring, performance management, and career development, with a focus on mentoring everyone from early-career engineers to Staff+ ICs.
  • Technical Excellence: Oversee the architecture of highly scalable, reliable, and extensible systems. You will apply a platform mindset to develop robust data models and clear APIs for real-time matching and marketplace segmentation.
  • ML & Optimization at Scale: Drive innovation in ML-powered systems, including real-time matching algorithms, forecasting models, and experiment-driven product development.
  • Execution & Delivery: Own the end-to-end delivery of critical projects. You will implement rigorous processes for planning and prioritization to ensure high-quality, timely releases while managing technical debt.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Act as a key bridge between Engineering, Data Science, and Product Management. You will translate complex business requirements into technical specifications and present team results to senior leadership.
  • Operational Health: Ensure the reliability and cost-efficiency of our services. You will drive initiatives for system simulation, change validation, and performance optimization to meet the demands of a global-scale marketplace.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering
  • 1+ years experience of management in building and leading a software engineering team
  • Proven track record of leading teams that have successfully built and shipped new products from 0 to 1

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD degree in computer science or other relevant fields
  • 8-10+ years of proven experience in software engineering
  • 3+ years of direct people management experience, including growing and mentoring engineers at different levels
  • Strong background in Machine Learning, Marketplace Dynamics, or Optimization Systems
  • Deep understanding of technical architecture and the ability to solve complex, ambiguous problems
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Product Management, Data Science, and Business partners

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$232,000 per year - USD$258,000 per year.

You will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan.
