About the Role

Uber’s newly formed AI Security team, part of the Core Security Engineering organization, is building the foundation for dynamic, data-driven security systems. We’re evolving Uber’s Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) to be more risk-adaptive across authentication and authorization, moving beyond static rules and manual approvals toward real-time, contextual access decisions that secure both humans and AI agents without slowing them down.

As a Senior Backend Software Engineer, you will design and build scalable, reliable systems that power Uber’s next-generation security platform. You’ll translate ambiguous business and security requirements into robust backend services, data pipelines, and infrastructure components, taking them end-to-end into production.

This is greenfield work at the intersection of security, distributed systems, and infrastructure, shaping how Uber secures AI at scale.

What the Candidate Will Need / Bonus Points

---- What the Candidate Will Do ----

  1. Translate business and security needs into scalable backend architectures and services.
  2. Design and implement high-performance APIs and services that enable risk-adaptive access decisions.
  3. Build data ingestion, processing, and storage systems that power security signals and analytics.
  4. Integrate backend services into Uber’s critical access pathways (containers, APIs, gateways, data platforms).
  5. Collaborate with Security, Risk, and Infrastructure teams to deliver production-ready systems.
  6. Provide technical leadership through mentoring, design reviews, and best practices.

---- Basic Qualifications ----

  1. 5+ years of experience designing and building large-scale backend systems from ambiguous business requirements.
  2. Strong proficiency in building distributed systems using modern backend languages (e.g., Go, Python, Java, or similar).
  3. Experience designing APIs, services, and data models for high-availability, low-latency systems.
  4. Hands-on experience with building, deploying, and operating production services.
  5. Strong understanding of system reliability, performance, and security best practices.

---- Preferred Qualifications ----

  1. Proven ability to own backend systems end-to-end: requirements → design → implementation → deployment → operations.
  2. Experience building real-time or near-real-time systems for risk, fraud, identity, or access control.
  3. Familiarity with large-scale data and infrastructure systems (Kafka, Pinot, Hive, Cassandra, Spark, Flink, etc.).
  4. Background in authentication, authorization, identity, or enterprise security platforms.
  5. Track record of technical leadership: mentoring engineers, driving cross-functional initiatives, or shaping platform strategy.
