Staff Software Engineer - Tax Calculations
Uber
About the Role
The Tax Calculations Engineering team operates at the epicenter of global commerce, serving as the architectural backbone and real-time financial control plane for Uber's multi-billion dollar platform. This is a mission-critical domain: our systems sit on the absolute critical path of every transaction—from a ride to a food delivery—and are responsible for accurately calculating and reconciling billions of tax liabilities worldwide. Failure here results in severe financial risk and exposure to major tax regulation penalties.
We are looking for a visionary Staff Engineer to define the technical strategy and execution roadmap for this complex, high-stakes infrastructure, ensuring financial accuracy and maximizing user experience across diverse global regulatory regions.
The Engineering Challenge & Stack

- Global Tax Rule Engine: Designing the core platform for Tax Rule Policy Evaluation & Decisioning to accurately interpret and apply complex tax laws across diverse jurisdictions at massive transaction scale.
- Financial Workflow Orchestration: Building high-volume, real-time workflows for calculating, posting, and reporting tax liabilities and deductions.
- High-Precision Calculation Services: Implementing highly concurrent, fault-tolerant APIs that calculate taxes for every Uber transaction globally with sub-millisecond precision
- Tax Reconciliation Platforms: Developing tools for complex financial reconciliation, audit trail generation, and the resolution of tax-related disputes.
- External Financial Integrations: Managing connections with essential third-party systems for tax data exchange and statutory submissions.
Furthermore, you will collaborate with multiple lines of business teams to influence and improve the end-user experience, ensuring tax calculation and reporting is accurate and seamless for every entity.
