Senior Engineering Manager - Merchant Fulfillment
Uber
About the Role
About the Team Uber's Merchant team helps restaurants build successful businesses on Uber Eats. This mission spans the entire merchant lifecycle, from onboarding to getting and fulfilling orders.
The Merchant Fulfillment organization is the operational backbone of this mission. We own the critical "Order Lifecycle" technologies that ensure millions of orders are received, processed, and fulfilled reliably every day. We are also the guardians of the merchant’s financial health, managing the complex workflows for disputes, cancellations, and operational reliability.
About the Role As a Senior Engineering Manager for Merchant Fulfillment in India, you will lead a geographically distributed team of 50+ Engineers and Engineering Managers. You will be responsible for delivering business-critical projects and platforms that merchants and restaurants rely on to run their daily operations.
This is a high-visibility leadership role where your decisions will directly impact merchant experience, sentiment and the operational trust of our merchant partners globally. You will partner with Product, Ops, and Design leaders in India and the US to define the strategy for how Uber Eats fulfills orders at scale.
What the Candidate Will Need / Bonus Points
---- What the Candidate Will Do ----
Lead at Scale: Manage and mentor a high-performing org of ~50 engineers and managers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, operational rigor, and customer empathy.
Drive Reliability: Own the "Uber Eats Orders" (UEO) tablet experience and the underlying reliability systems that ensure 99.99% uptime for order injection and processing.
Solve Complex Disputes: Build intelligent, automated platforms for Chargebacks, Cancellations, and Disputes, reducing financial losses for merchants and Uber while improving fairness.
Unlock New Growth: Lead the BYOC (Bring Your Own Courier) charter, building the "To-Go" and courier onboarding tech that allows merchants to fulfill orders with their own fleets.
Operational Efficiency: own the "Defect Reduction" mandate, using technology to predict and prevent order failures before they happen.
---- Basic Qualifications ----
Experience: 12+ years of engineering experience with 6+ years in people management, ideally leading managers and larger organizations (50+).
Technical Depth: Strong background in building high-scale, distributed systems. You can dive deep into architecture discussions on reliability, eventual consistency, and real-time data processing.
Strategic Vision: Ability to translate complex business goals (e.g., "Reduce Partner Avoidable Failures") into a concrete technical roadmap.
Customer Obsession: A passion for solving real-world operational problems. You understand that a "bug" in our system means a lost dinner for a customer and lost revenue for a small business.
Collaborative Mindset: Experience working in a global setup, influencing stakeholders across time zones and functions to drive consensus.
---- Preferred Qualifications ----
Frontend Depth: Deep familiarity with modern frontend ecosystems (React, Next.js, Micro-frontends) and mobile platforms (React Native).
Scale: Experience managing systems with high throughput and strict latency SLAs (e.g., P99 < 200ms).
Influence: Ability to drive consensus across multiple product teams. You can convince a vertical team to adopt your platform standard rather than building a custom one-off solution.
