What You Will Do

As a Systems Engineer with Trimble, you will work in a cross-functional role to define product requirements, design and document systems architecture, and aid the development cycle in a technology leadership role. Our products include rugged, mobile computers running Windows or Android operating systems, as well as advanced sensor modules and other wirelessly connected accessories that combine to form complete, field-deployed systems.

You will have broad knowledge across several technologies, including computer and mobile device architecture, GNSS, cameras, inertial sensors, Radio technologies (WWAN, BT, WIFI, NFC, etc), outdoor readable displays, rugged electronics packaging, and batteries, with in-depth subject matter expertise in one or more of these.

The term architecture above includes Hardware, Firmware & Software knowledge. Of particular interest for this role is experience with Android OS Firmware.

For major product development projects, you may be asked to take on a Lead Engineer assignment. This will involve assisting the Product Manager by maturing the product concept as the business case develops, sharing responsibility to write the project mission statement, and being the primary author of the PRD (Product Requirements Document).

You also lead the technical design effort while coordinating with the Product Manager to ensure that market and customer requirements are met, and with the Project Manager to align technical development with schedule, budget, and resource plans.

Travel may be required internationally (up to 10%) for interoffice, supplier, and customer visits.

In this role, you will:

  • Assume leadership for all technical aspects of the project, being recognised as the go-to person for engineering decisions and advice

  • Take a lead role in communicating with vendors and partners participating in the product design. Communicating requirements and methods to resolve issues

  • Collaborate with the Product Manager to iterate and mature the product concept as needed to facilitate Voice of Customer input and business case development, leading to the official start of the project

  • Lead the creation of the PRD, delegating portions among the Engineering team, Subject Matter Experts, Compliance, and Operations as needed for technical completeness

  • Collaborate with the Product Manager and Project Manager to write a unified Project Mission Statement around a coherent and compelling vision for the product

  • Collaborate with the Project Manager to agree on a list of knowledge and decision-A3s to develop as needed to close knowledge gaps during project learning cycles and at other times as deemed beneficial

  • Speak as the leading voice of engineering to communicate critical paths, technical risks, mitigation plans, and resource gaps

  • The role will require you to own the product from a technical perspective, from the concept to the last production device.

What Qualifications, Skills & Experience You Should Bring

As well as possessing solid analytical and problem-solving skills, good verbal communication, high attention to detail, and the ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment as a proven team player, you should be able to bring the following:

  • BS degree in Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering. MS degree preferred

  • In-depth expertise and demonstrated ability to design and architect mobile computing systems and subsystems, including electrical HW, FW, RF, and mechanical interfaces, and bringing these products to market

  • Ability to solve complicated and complex problems, and confidently make and defend the resulting decisions. These skills are needed for the lead engineering aspect of the role

  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing with a wide variety of people/audiences. Comfortable pitching the product vision and project mission to stakeholders from varying backgrounds, often at senior levels in the organisation

  • Comfortable engaging in constructive negotiation with Product and Project Managers, anticipating possible objections, to resolve conflicting goals and interests

  • Has the ability to take ownership and lead projects to completion

  • Experience with NPI (New Product Introduction) process and activities

  • Take responsibility to mentor junior team members where necessary.
