As a member of the Digital Workplace Technology team, the Linux Endpoints System Engineer will plan, deploy, and maintain solutions for our Linux (Ubuntu Desktop) client devices across TomTom with a focus on self-service and automation keeping our client fleet secure and up-to-date. The location for this position is either in the Netherlands (Amsterdam or Eindhoven).

This includes solutions for collaboration, communication, productivity, meeting rooms, and hardware. For most, Microsoft platforms and tools are at the core. On our team, you’ll help design, develop, deliver, operate, and support solutions through a defined set of services, so that together at TomTom we can better create location technologies for a safer, cleaner, congestion-free world.
What you’ll do:
  • Linux Command Line Expertise; Experience with Bash and shell scripting to automate repetitive tasks and troubleshoot issues
  • Manage and maintain Linux (Ubuntu) lifecycles, automated distributions, and self-service for our Linux (Ubuntu) users worldwide.
  • Deliver the best Ubuntu user experience and Linux device security for our TomTom employees using Landscape, in-house developed tooling and scripting
  • Maintain the Linux documentation in the Confluence for both users and support team.
  • Maintain hardware standards and peripherals for our Ubuntu engineers
  • Security; Implementing and maintaining security best practices, including firewall configurations, Apparmor/SELinux/PAM, and encrypted data communications.
  • File Systems: Understanding of EXT4, XFS, and other file systems used in Ubuntu/Linux.
  • Backup and Recovery; Implementing backup solutions (e.g., rsync, tar, or enterprise solutions) and disaster recovery plans.
  • Hardware Troubleshooting; Basic hardware diagnostic and repair skills, given that laptops would be the focal point
  • Work in a small global Technology team that focuses on the technologies used in the Digital Workplace to engineer and deliver solutions for our global user community, work closely with Product Manager and our key stakeholders
What you’ll need:
  • Bachelor's degree in related technical studies, or equivalent through work experience
  • 5+ years of professional experience and expertise in an IT engineering role focused on Linux client engineering
  • Networking; Understanding of network protocols, troubleshooting, VPNs, and firewall rules. Familiarity with tools like `ifconfig`, `netstat`, `nmap`, etc.
  • Configuration Management: Experience with Ansible, Puppet, or Chef to manage a fleet of Ubuntu laptops at scale.
  • Programming Skills (Optional); Knowledge of Python, Perl, or other scripting languages for custom tooling and automation.
  • Version Control (Optional); Familiarity with Git for versioning scripts, configuration files, and documentation.
  • Virtualization; Proficiency with virtual machines and containers like Docker, especially for creating isolated testing environments.
  • Package Management; Advanced knowledge of APT (Advanced Package Tool) for package installation, removal, and system updates.
  • Strong analytical, and hands-on problem-solving and troubleshooting skills and ability to manage complex or escalated support issues
  • Excellent (English) communication skills and cross-cultural adaptability
  • Teamwork; effective collaboration within IT and cross-functional teams
  • Customer Service: Given that you will be supporting end-users, a strong sense of customer service is essential
  • Problem-Solving: Quick thinking to diagnose and solve issues as they arise, often under pressure
  • Creative ideas, suggestions, and a new way of doing something
  • Learning and adapting to new technologies

Nice to have:
  • LPIC-2/3: Linux Professional Institute Certification for higher-level management.
  • RHCE: Red Hat Certified Engineer can also be helpful even if the focus is on Ubuntu.
  • CompTIA Linux+: For broader Linux competencies.
  • Security Certifications: CISSP or equivalent for enterprise security know-how.
  • Architectural / consultancy background
  • Cloud experience (Azure)
  • MacOS experience (desired)
  • JAMF Pro Certifications (Optional), or willing to obtain these in the coming year (JAMF 100, 200 & 300)
  • Availability to travel from time to time
