Terran Orbital is seeking an experienced Sr. Test Automation Hardware Engineer to join our dynamic team. Reporting to the Sr. Integrated Product Team (IPT) Lead – Command & Data Handling (CDH) Production, the Sr. Test Automation Hardware Engineer will focus on designing, developing, and maintaining test systems for electronic Command & Data Handling (CDH) modules, with a strong emphasis on hardware architecture and integration. This role requires expertise in selecting and configuring test hardware, collaborating with software engineers to develop automation solutions, and continuously improving test system architecture to ensure compliance with testing requirements.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and develop hardware for test systems used to evaluate electronic modules, focusing on chassis, instruments, and data acquisition equipment.
  • Select and configure test instruments and equipment to meet testing requirements, including data logging, data sampling, and power supply needs.
  • Develop and document test system hardware architecture, including hardware interfaces and communication protocols (e.g., GPIB, USB, Ethernet, RS-485, RS-422).
  • Collaborate with test software engineers to integrate hardware with automation software (e.g., LabVIEW, Python) in test systems.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in test system architecture and implement updates in collaboration with software engineers and module design engineers.
  • Support module testing in environmental conditions such as thermal vacuum (TVAC) chambers and thermal chambers.
  • Document test systems using CAD tools, creating detailed schematics, diagrams, and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Provide technical expertise in the use of electronic loads, power supply equipment, and JTAG testing at the PCBA and module levels.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues during testing.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 5 years of experience designing and developing hardware for test systems used to evaluate electronic modules.
  • Strong knowledge of hardware interfaces and communication protocols, including GPIB, USB, Ethernet, RS-485, and RS-422.
  • Familiarity with electronic loads, power supply equipment, and data acquisition systems.
  • Experience with automation software such as LabVIEW and Python.
  • Proficiency in documenting test systems using CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Visio).
  • Experience testing modules in environmental conditions such as TVAC and thermal chambers.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain DoD security clearance

Additional Differentiators

  • Experience with JTAG testing at the PCBA and module levels.
  • Familiarity with PXI and PCI/PCIe architectures.
  • Deep knowledge of test instrumentation, including thermocouples, accelerometers, DAQs, and NI Chassis.
  • Experience in a production environment within the aerospace industry.
  • Hands-on experience working in cleanroom environments with ESD precautions.

Your actual level and base salary will be determined case-by-case and may vary based on the job-related qualification, knowledge, skills, education, and experience.
