Location: Glasgow, United Kingdom
Job Purpose:
Lead the assembly, integration, testing, and documentation of electronic systems and components for spacecraft, ensuring their functionality and reliability.
Responsibilities:
Collaboration and Support
- Work closely with engineers, scientists, and other technicians to support various space missions and projects.
- Provide technical assistance and support during the development and testing phases of projects.
Harnessing
- Assemble, test and install complex wiring harnesses for electronic systems.
- Ensure all harnesses meet advanced technical specifications and quality standards.
Mechanical Assembly
- Assemble mechanical components and structures for electronic systems.
- Ensure precise alignment and secure fastening of all mechanical parts.
Electronics Assembly
- Produce printed circuit assemblies by means of hand soldering electronic components, primarily SMT devices with the aid of a microscope.
- Verify the integrity and functionality of assembled electronic systems.
Cleaning and Bonding
- Perform thorough cleaning of electronic/mechanical components and completed assemblies.
- Stake electronic components and bond mechanical assemblies accurately to ensure high reliability.
- Ensure corresponding chemical solutions, adhesives and epoxies are stored appropriately, applied correctly, and replenished as required.
Integration and Testing
- Integrate electronic and mechanical systems to form complete units.
- Conduct comprehensive testing to ensure system functionality and reliability.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any issues identified during testing.
Production-Related Documentation
- Study and interpret specifications, assembly drawings and assembly instructions in preparation for hand soldering.
- Maintain detailed records of assembly processes, test results, and maintenance activities.
- Update production-related documentation to reflect any changes or modifications.
- Ensure all documentation is accurate and up to date.
Maintenance and Repair
- Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Troubleshoot and repair any issues with electronic systems and components.
Inventory Management
- Manage inventory of electronic materials and supplies, ensuring adequate stock levels.
- Order, receive, and store electronic materials and supplies as needed.
- Kit components for reflow and hand soldering processes.
Safety and Compliance
- Adhere to safety protocols and industry standards in all laboratory activities.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and organisational policies.
Quality Assurance
- Ensure all laboratory activities meet the highest quality standards.
- Implement quality control measures throughout the testing and maintenance processes.
- Perform thorough inspections on incoming and outgoing components and assemblies and complete reports on findings.
- Conduct peer reviews of completed assemblies and documentation
Project Management
- Manage time effectively to meet project deadlines.
- Coordinate with project teams to ensure timely completion of tasks.
Continuous Improvement
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in electronic technology and laboratory practices.
- Propose and implement improvements to laboratory procedures and equipment.
- Provide technical training to production personnel
Required Qualifications:
- HNC / HND Electronic Engineering or a related field
Required Work Experience:
Extensive Electronics Hardware Experience
- At least 5 – 10 years of hands-on experience working with electronic systems and components
Advanced Embedded Systems Knowledge
- Experience with embedded systems, including microcontrollers and IoT devices
- Ability to program and interface with complex embedded systems
Laboratory Management
- Previous experience in managing laboratory activities, including conducting tests and experiments on electronic systems
- Proficiency in using advanced diagnostic tools and equipment for testing and troubleshooting
Assembly and Integration
- Extensive experience in assembling and integrating electronic and mechanical systems
- Expertise in harnessing, mechanical assembly, and electronics assembly
Maintenance and Repair
- Proven track record in maintaining and repairing electronic systems and laboratory equipment
Documentation and Reporting
- Ability to maintain detailed records of laboratory activities and generate comprehensive reports on findings
- Experience with accessing and updating ERP / MRP & MES software in a production environment
Required Technical Competencies
PCB Design and Fabrication
- Thorough understanding of PCB fabrication and assembly processes.
- Proficiency with using PCB viewer software to aid with assembly and fault analysis.
Embedded Systems
- Advanced knowledge of embedded systems, including microcontrollers and IoT devices.
- Ability to program and interface with complex embedded systems
Soldering and Assembly
- High proficiency in soldering electronic components and assembling complex electronic systems.
- Expertise in fine-pitch surface-mount technology (SMT) and through-hole soldering techniques.
Testing and Troubleshooting
- Proficiency in using advanced diagnostic tools and equipment for testing and troubleshooting electronic systems.
- Conducting comprehensive functional and performance tests on electronic components and systems
Harnessing and Cabling
- Expertise in designing, assembling, and installing complex wiring harnesses for electronic systems.
- Advanced knowledge of cable management and termination techniques.
Mechanical Assembly
- Ability to lead the assembly of mechanical components and structures for electronic systems.
- Understanding of detailed mechanical drawings and advanced assembly procedures.
Integration and Testing
- Extensive experience in integrating electronic and mechanical systems to form complete units.
- Conducting comprehensive testing to ensure system functionality and reliability
Documentation and Reporting
- Ability to maintain detailed records of assembly processes, test results, and maintenance activities.
- Proficiency in preparing comprehensive reports on laboratory activities and findings
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Teams, SharePoint, MS Outlook, MS Word and MS Excel)
Safety and Compliance
- In-depth knowledge of industry standards and safety regulations.
- Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and organisational policies.
