Optical Engineer (f/m/d)

About Satellogic

Satellogic is a vertically integrated Earth Observation company that designs, manufactures, and operates satellite systems, delivering decision-grade insights at scale to government and commercial customers.

We build space systems end-to-end, from satellite design and manufacturing to launch and on-orbit operations, giving us the ability to deploy quickly, operate reliably, and support persistent monitoring across regions and priority areas. Our approach moves customers beyond one-off imagery toward continuous awareness and alert-driven decision-making, with flexible pathways that can evolve from managed monitoring to full satellite ownership and sovereign control.

Our technology supports a wide range of use cases across climate monitoring, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, defense and intelligence, helping organizations detect change, manage risk, and plan with confidence.

With a team of approximately 150 employees across five countries, Satellogic brings together expertise in satellite engineering, software development, data science, manufacturing, operations, and go-to-market. We’re a group of purpose-driven builders who value ownership, curiosity, and execution—and who work with humility, honesty, and empathy.

About the team

As the visionary core of our satellites, the Optics team serves as the architect behind our optical payloads and assemblies. We are responsible for the full optical lifecycle—from high-level conceptualization and modeling to defining precise component specifications. We work hand-in-hand with the AIT team, translating our designs into verified, flight-ready hardware.

The team is always learning and trying to push the limits, relying in part on the large diversity of people’s profiles and backgrounds.

About the position

You will be responsible for modeling and analyzing high-performance imaging hardware, specifically focusing on hyper/multispectral cameras and telescope assemblies. Beyond the computer, you will validate designs through rigorous calibration and experimentation in our labs and plant. Your scope extends to the project's operational success, including supplier development and the tracking of key development phases.

Location

Our labs are located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Remote work is acceptable depending on the stage of the projects and you will be coordinating availability with your manager according to Satellogic needs.

Responsibilities

  • Model, perform simulations and analysis of lenses, telescopes, filters, and of optical sensor components for imaging systems in visible and near infrared light (ray tracing, Fourier optics, radiometry).
  • Perform tolerance analysis and manufacturing feasibility studies for new optical payloads.
  • Define and develop quality metrics and acceptance criteria for the optical payloads.
  • Suggest improvements in optomechanical design of our lenses and cameras to simplify manufacturing processes and improve manufacturing quality.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers in optomechanical design of space optical systems components.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers in the development of optical alignment, integration and calibration procedures.
  • Collaborate with the image processing team on assessing new metrics, evaluate optical quality and monitor quality in different processing levels.
  • Collaborate with product managers on requirements and feasibility analysis of projects involving optical components or processes.
  • Define and engineer acceptance criteria, quality metrics and acceptance procedures for external suppliers.
  • Partner with multiple suppliers to obtain the best product costing and quality and improve supply chain reliability.

About you

Experience

  • Degree in optical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, electronics engineering, image processing or similar field of study or equivalent work experience.
  • Programming experience (preferably in Python)
  • Experience executing complex engineering projects in a dynamic environment with tight deadlines.

Skills

  • You are skilled in scientific computing and you have a general appeal for modeling.
  • Good scripting and automation skills.
  • Advanced English proficiency levels.
  • Willingness to learn working Spanish.
  • Capacity to learn continuously and passion for pushing the limits.
  • Passion about lenses, telescopes, space photography and pushing the limits of current technologies.

What we value

  • Experience with ray tracing optical design software (Zemax preferred).
  • Experience in image processing techniques (basic)
  • Availability to travel to suppliers (mainly in Europe) or manufacturing plant (in Uruguay) as required

Diversity Commitment

Satellogic values diversity and inclusion and is an equal opportunity employer. We are convinced that hiring and developing top talent from around the world for any given discipline will drive innovation, generate new solutions, and deliver a superior product to our global customer base. We work to build an equitable and inclusive environment in which all people, regardless of gender, race, religion, or background, can come together to do their best work.
