What you'll do

The intern will be working in the Spacecraft Engineering department of the Satellite Operations Division. The team you will be working with maintain the health and performance of the Viasat satellites and aim to achieve our operations critical metric of 99.99% service availability for our customers each month. The Spacecraft Engineering team are involved with the routine operations scheduling, monitoring and satellite data trend analysis as well as performing anomaly investigations and contingency recovery operations when issues arise with the satellites.


The candidate will gain knowledge and experience in:
Spacecraft operations and the main technical and managerial principles
Principles of spacecraft subsystem engineering
Python tools for operations engineering support and the spacecraft engineering test and validation environment including setting up and running satellite simulators.

This project will expose the candidate to the following technologies:
I4S flight software as used to control the spacecraft fleet
Use of Dynamics Spacecraft Simulators (DSS)
Spacecraft subsystem engineering
Development of telemetry displays


The day-to-day

The intern will support the development of python-based tools used by the Spacecraft Engineering team in Satellite Operations Division that will be used to support our operations. One example is a satellite beam steering operations log tool, tracking accumulated movements are not violating operational constraints. The intern will also use spacecraft simulators to be able to develop test scenarios. By the end of the internship, the candidate will have learned the basic concepts required to create a python tool for use in the spacecraft operational environment. Plan, develop, test and release a new Beam Steering Tool for our GX5 satellite.

The intern will also have the opportunity to gain exposure to day-to-day spacecraft operations. Including but not limited to routine monitoring, support of real-time operations and engineering discussions. By the end of the internship, the candidate will have gained knowledge in the principles of spacecraft sub-systems, spacecraft engineering and design and knowledge and practical experience in the principles of operating spacecraft and managing a large fleet of spacecraft.

Internship Programme Details:

  • You will work onsite at the Viasat London office for the duration of your 12-13 week internship. Viasat embraces a flexible work environment and onsite/hybrid work is determined by individual roles and teams.

  • To ensure equity across our intern population, intern compensation is pre-determined based on a variety of factors including: role, location, and final graduation date. Intern compensation is non-negotiable.


What you'll need

Education Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree or higher in a science or engineering field
  • To be eligible for this position you must complete your degree between December 2026 and Summer 2027

Internship Dates:

  • You must be available for the full duration of the internship programme. Note limited exceptions may be granted.
    • Cohort 1: 15th June 2026 – 11th September 2026

Additional Requirements:

Python experience is required for this role. No spacecraft operations experience required, however this brief requires a background in or are studying (or have studied) a Science & Engineering discipline.
