What you'll do
The Maritime Safety Team is responsible for the safety of 1.9 million seafarers around the world. We ensure the organisational compliances with the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) regulatory requirements to provide a GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems) satellite system and services.
As part of a small hardworking team you will engage extensively with both internal and external departments, including IMO delegates, external regulatory bodies, Viasat engineering, Network Operation Centre, and most Inmarsat / Viasat departments as the subject matter authority on Maritime Safety.
Your role will involve being the top specialist on the Inmarsat Maritime Safety System and Services, including SafetyNET (II), RescueNET, Inmarsat C and L-Band networks.
As the specialist you will maintain the services, develope new systems/services and support our ship and shore side customers, including Rescue Coordination Centres, Search and Rescue, Land Earth Stations and vessels in distress situations.
Responsibilities include:
- Responsibility for and management of all technical aspects of Inmarsat’s Maritime Safety and Security Services, to ensure their efficient and effective delivery.
- Responsibility for operational and delivery of Maritime Safety and Security Services.
- Development and growth of the Inmarsat brand and Safety Services’ reputation.
- Proactive defence of Inmarsat’s role in the wider maritime marketing and safety area.
- Development, as part of a core team, of strategy for overall delivery of Maritime Safety Services, in compliance with the Company’s Public Services Agreement with the International Mobile Satellite Organisation (IMSO).
The day-to-day
No two days are the same in Maritime Safety. Reporting directly to the Head of Maritime Safety, you will support day to day responsibilities including the maintenance of the global maritime safety servers, hosting vital regulated safety of life services that ensure our seafarers remain safe at sea.
Our shore side customers include global Rescue Coordination Centres, who actively respond to Distress situations at sea, IMO delegations, over sight organisations such as IMSO, ITU and the IMO.
What you'll need
As the Maritime Safety Technical and Operational Manager, you will need:
- Understanding of maritime safety and satellite communications
- Proficiency in the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
- Familiarity with IMO (International Maritime Organisation) and relevant regulations
- Proficient knowledge in maritime satellite communications.
- At least five years’ confirmed experience working within the maritime or satellite communications industry.
- Understanding of service delivery and product management
- Candidates require excellent written and oral communication skills, in the English language.
- Familiarity with standard Microsoft Office PC packages, encompassing Word processing, PowerPoint, Excel spreadsheets, and related databases.
- An individual who is self-assured and can build positive relationships with a variety of collaborators.

The Safety Team is passionate about safety of life at sea. We see day to day how our work saves lives at sea, makes the oceans a safer place, and drive positive change in the regulatory environment. Having the self drive to maintain and develope new services is vital for such a position.
We travel globally with regulatory organisations, delivering public speeches to customers and VIPs about our safety services and regulatory changes. Having confidence and the ability to speak in public, as well as one to one with VIPs is crucial.
