What you'll do
The Systems Integration Specialist will provide technical expertise in delivery and sustainment of satellite connected networking solutions for Viasat International Government (VIG) customers, primarily focused in Canada, EMEA and Latin America.
You are a self-sufficient and self-motivated engineering professional who will provide networking infrastructure design, satcom system installation, commissioning, training and post-sales support to Viasat Government customers as part of the Service Delivery Western Hemisphere team.
The day-to-day
- Identify and adapt an existing solution design to ensure its deliverable, including creating the as-built instance documentation
- Satellite solution hardware component configuration development
- Satellite solution hardware installations, including hosting, remote terminal, ground station and quality audit supplier installations
- Satellite solution commissioning (testing, inspecting, and checking all the operational components of a project)
- Development and delivery of infield operator technical training to subcontractors and customers as required
- Review VCRM or similar ‘sign-off’ documentation ensuring the built solution meets requirements/specifications
- Creation of technical documentation for system maintenance activities
- Support and maintenance of VIG Solutions internal network infrastructure (routers, firewalls, managed switches, servers and SaaS systems)
- Provide surveys & quotes as part of ongoing deliverables
- Warranty & Extended Warranty Support
- Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) – handle situations when a customer returns items for repair and maintenance, or for refund or replacement
- Preventative & corrective maintenance for networking equipment, satellite hardware & other associated hardware
- Conducting diagnosis, either physically or remotely, of issues being experienced by end users with end-to-end solutions to isolate the identified cause of the incident and implement corrective maintenance strategies, as agreed with the end user to return the system to serviceable.
- Be a technical escalation point for the Technical Support Desk Engineer, supporting problem solving and restoration activities for satcom systems and networking solutions.
- Manage safety considerations – local risk assessment/safety surveys
- Supervision of allocated contractors or assisting peers
- Conduct and report on the technical skills assessments of subcontractors
- Providing satcom system training to end users/customer & contractors
- Engaging contractors to provide training if required
- Ensure project work is recorded and updated in work management system (Jira), enabling reports to upper management and customers of status, risks, issues and schedules
- Identify and manage key technical risks, developing mitigation strategies and implementing during delivery
- Provide assistance to pre-sales engineering for demonstrations, exhibitions and partner support activities if required.
- Providing bid lead/project manager input for proposal schedules, resource forecasts and costs for technical elements of non-standard order if required
- Review customer requirements and propose network changes needed to implement
- Review and assess change requests as part of the Technical Change Board (TCB)
- Attend weekly TCB meetings to advocate own proposed changes/provide engineering comment on other proposed changes within their field of expertise
- Conduct site visits as required to action physical audits, carry out maintenance activities on network equipment, modems, RF switches
- Capture and document device configurations, conducting comparisons as necessary to confirm device compliance to approved configuration baseline
- Update device approved configuration baseline records as part of an approved change
What you'll need
- Significant experience in network engineering and/or satellite communications technologies/industry
- Capable of developing and applying configurations to IP networking devices such as routers, firewalls and managed switches to allow a solution to function as designed to meet customer needs
- Knowledge of Wide Area Network (WAN) technologies
- Working knowledge of operating systems – experience in installation, upgrading and administering Windows and Ubuntu Linux operating systems
- Experience in Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) system installation & modem configuration
- Experience in installing and operating Satellite Hub systems
- Ability to analyse customer issues and devise solutions for clients, regardless of the issue being satellite or terrestrial segment based
- Use of radiofrequency (RF) lab equipment, spectrum analysers, cabling, attenuation and antenna analysers
- Experience in use of lab test and measurement equipment (power supplies, DVMs, oscilloscopes, signal generators)
- System integration experience - integrating sub-systems, working through integration problems and hardware skills (e.g. testing cable manufacture)
- Experience interfacing with customers
- Ability to bridge the gap and explain technical issues and concepts to non-technical stakeholders, including ability to prepare and deliver technical presentations and reports to both internal and external clients on solutions performance against defined metrics as well as network events or outages
- Constant curiosity to upskill and fill knowledge gaps of VIG’s products, technology, processes and network
- Flexibility to enjoy action in a variety of different roles as company needs evolve
- Self-motivated and be able to motivate their peers to achieve required task and project completion to industry best practices in a busy environment
- Must be competent with use of Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as Microsoft Visio.
- User or strong willingness to upskill in use of Jira and Confluence
- Must be able to understand and advocate compliance with QHSSE requirements
- As this position directly supports Viasat customers in a global community who operate 24/7 networks and systems, it is essential that working hours are flexible. The staff-member in this role will be expected to work with their line manager to adjust working hours to deliver services as required by the role while maintaining a satisfactory work – life balance.
- This role may require travel, both domestically and internationally. The staff-member in this role will be required, on an irregular basis and provided reasonable notice, to travel sometimes for periods exceeding 7 days, and if required to travel on weekends to meet on-site weekday commitments.
- Must have and maintain a Current drivers’ license and passport for the location country
- Must be able to qualify and maintain a government Security Clearance appropriate for the location
