Job Summary:
Systems Engineer V serves as a senior technical leader responsible for defining, integrating, and validating complex defense systems. This position oversees system architecture development, requirements traceability, technical risk management, and system verification/validation strategy across multiple subsystems and suppliers. The role emphasizes strategic planning, cross-functional leadership, and authoritative guidance in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices.
The Level V engineer acts as both a technical authority and team mentor, ensuring program-level systems engineering rigor and compliance with contractual and mission requirements
Responsibilities:
- Lead development and validation of system architecture, functional allocations, and interface definitions across all program tiers
- Oversee system, subsystem, and interface requirements definition and maintenance; ensure full traceability, verification, and compliance with MDA standards
- Direct creation and execution of system-level verification and validation plans, including definition of success criteria, test configurations, and compliance reporting
- Manage system-level risk identification, mitigation strategy, and integration into program risk posture
- Coordinate technical baseline management, change control, and participation in formal reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR)
- Provide authoritative MBSE leadership — guide SysML modeling standards, integration with requirements databases, and digital engineering toolchain alignment
- Interface extensively with propulsion, software, hardware, GNC, and test teams to ensure coherent system-level performance and verification closure
- Serve as primary technical liaison with customer and supplier organizations on requirements flowdown, verification progress, and technical issue resolution
- Support program management by contributing to schedule, resource, and technical risk assessments aligned with Earned Value Management (EVM) principles
- Mentor junior and mid-level systems engineers, fostering knowledge transfer and process maturity within the organization
Required Qualifications:
- U.S. Citizenship required due to federal contract eligibility
- Must have or be able to obtain and maintain an active DoD Secret Clearance
- Experience supporting Missile Defense Agency (MDA) or similar DoD programs
- Must comply with ITAR regulations
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex system development efforts across multiple disciplines and phases of the engineering lifecycle
- Proven track record of mentoring, peer review participation, and technical leadership within large or distributed engineering teams
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with the ability to interface effectively at all management and customer levels
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience:
- 10 to 15 years of systems engineering experience in DoD, aerospace, or missile defense programs
- Proven experience leading system architecture definition, requirements management, and system-level integration and verification activities
- Demonstrated success in coordinating multi-disciplinary technical teams and leading customer-facing reviews
- Deep familiarity with MDA processes, CDRL development, and systems engineering lifecycle standards
- Significant experience applying MBSE principles using SysML and Cameo Systems Modeler (MagicDraw)
- Experience driving trade studies, technical risk assessments, and design review closure across distributed engineering teams
Education:
- Required: Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in systems engineering, aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or related STEM field from an accredited college/university
Skills:
- Expert-level proficiency in requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS)
- Advanced understanding of SysML modeling (block definition, activity, sequence, and state diagrams) and MBSE integration practices
- Deep knowledge of systems engineering lifecycle standards (INCOSE SE Handbook, MIL-STD-499)
- Skilled in risk management, root cause analysis, and development of mitigation strategies
- Strong communication, briefing, and technical writing skills for customer and executive-level interaction
- Ability to lead and review complex technical documentation, verification artifacts, and compliance matrices
- Competent with Microsoft Project and related project-tracking tools
Others:
- Experience supporting or leading major technical reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR, FRR) for MDA or comparable defense programs
- Working knowledge of DoDAF architecture frameworks and digital engineering environments
- Experience with Earned Value Management (EVM), scheduling tools, or model-based integration of technical baselines
- Willingness to travel up to 10–15% to support customer reviews, test events, and supplier coordination
