The Position

The Software Department at MDA Space is currently seeking a Database Architect / Infrastructure Engineer/MTS (Member of Technical Staff) on our Robotics & Space Operations team at our Brampton office. Database Architect / Infrastructure Engineer, you will be instrumental in using your skill and experience to design, implement, maintain custom, on-prem databases to process structured and unstructured data.

With 40 years of operational experience and proven performance on the iconic Canadarm programs including Space Shuttle and International Space Station robotics and operations support, our Robotics & Space Operations team has 100% mission success in making space dreams come true.

Job Responsibilities

As part of a team:

  • Review Database System Requirements and System Verifications documented by the System Engineers
  • Understand and assess design issues, determine appropriate resolutions, and work with the team to address them.
  • Continuously improve system reliability, performance, and capacity through proactive monitoring, automation, and optimization
  • Develop and maintain internal build pipelines and necessary extensions, ensuring compliance and long-term maintainability
  • Profile, benchmark, and troubleshoot performance issues at scale to identify architectural and operational bottlenecks
  • Deep dive into Ceph and Couchbase code and architecture to optimize performance and scalability for production workloads

Required Skills/Experience

  • System Design Experience: 4+ years of experience in system design or architecture, including reliability and scaling of new and existing system.
  • Sysadmin/SRE Experience: 1+ years of experience in operationally responsible for production environment database clusters.
  • Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

Beneficial Skills/Experience

  • On-prem data centre: Experience working with on-prem infrastructure as sysadmin or site reliability engineer (SRE) in data centre.
  • Ceph & Rook: Hands-on experience managing Ceph storage solution using Rook.
  • SQL database: Hands-on experience managing SQL databases under Kubernetes environment.
  • System Programming: Strong fundamentals in system programming with proficiency in C# or equivalent languages.
  • CI/CD: Strong fundamentals in infrastructure automation tools such as Kubernetes, Docker, and Jenkins.
  • Networking & Security: Strong fundamentals in infrastructure networking and security standards such as NIST 800-53.

Comments/Special Considerations

Successful candidates must obtain and hold security clearance at the reliability status level, and pass security assessment for the Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and ITAR.
