Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

What We’re Looking For:
If you are an experienced Engineer with a highly technical mindset who is passionate about new and emerging technologies, then you will be excited about the Navigation Engineer opening with Iridium. As a Navigation Engineer, you’ll independently deliver high-quality work and drive projects and deliverables to completion. In this role, you will work with the internal development team and with commercial partners to implement the company’s flagship Satellite Time and Location (STL) solution on new platforms.

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop and maintain signal processing algorithms and associated hardware implementations for PNT positioning products
  • Collaborates with internal and external customers and technical peers to solve complex system problems
  • Support system design by identifying and recommending design and requirements needs for future enhancements
  • Contribute to all aspects of the product life cycle (concept, development, integration, qualification, acceptance, delivery, and maintenance)
  • Follows established configuration/change control processes

Experience & Education Requirements / EEO

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience with digital radio systems such as GPS/GNSS or software definable radios
  • Knowledge of GPS/GNSS technology and navigation algorithm
  • Experience with simulation and debugging with MATLAB/Octave
  • Ability to work seamlessly within a team as well as manage individual tasks
  • Proven ability to work independently, designing, developing, and deploying solutions, and delivering projects on time with minimal direction
  • Ability to listen and evaluate all opinions without bias, and contribute to a common culture of excellence
  • Possess an analytical mindset, with the ability to understand a situation or problem and think critically to make decisions or come up with solutions
  • Be active in seeking out ways to continuously improve yourself and gain new knowledge

Things That Would be Nice if You Brought to the Table:

  • Familiarity with digital processing techniques including: FIR/IIR/adaptive filtering, modulation, demodulation, convolution, cross-correlation, spectral methods (Fourier, wavelet), phase-locked loops, numerically controlled oscillators, etc.
  • Experience with hardware/software partitioning of digital signal processing functions to optimize throughput and/or SWAP
  • Knowledge of analog systems and components utilized in the transmission and reception of RF waveforms such as filters, antennas, amplifiers, modulators, mixers, and ADC/DAC.
  • Familiarity with digital communication topics such as channel models, carrier/symbol synchronization, block codes, convolutional codes, equalization, etc.
  • Experience in the simulation and analysis of radio systems, algorithms, and data processing chains
  • Proficient in linear algebra, probability, and stochastic processes
  • Experience with linear and/or non-linear optimization using standard techniques such as least squares, weighted least squares, and Kalman Filtering
  • Understanding of numerical considerations/tradeoffs between fixed point and floating point arithmetic when implementing signal processing algorithms

Things That Would be GREAT if You Brought to the Table:

  • Master’s or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related field
  • Knowledge of space mission design/analysis and orbital mechanics
  • Experience working on the design of GPS/GNSS receivers
  • Familiarity with embedded software development environment and tools for real-time embedded operating systems (RTOS), such as VxWorks and FreeRTOS
  • Knowledgeable in programming concepts including data structures, algorithms, databases, and multithreading
  • Solid understanding of memory management on embedded platforms
  • Familiarity with common RF/HW/FW/SW tools such as oscilloscope, logic analyzer, signal generator, spectrum analyzer, network analyzer, Chipscope, GDB, JTAG, etc.
  • Experience with RF/hardware design and debugging
  • Ability to read and understand schematic drawings and component datasheets
  • Experience in FPGA development (VHDL, Verilog), and associated synthesis + place/route tools

We’ll also need you to:

  • Be a US Citizen (due to government contracts)

Work Environment:

This position primarily works in the company office or in a home office. The position is largely sedentary with the majority of the position sitting in a chair and working with a computer. The role uses basic office equipment including a phone, video, computer, keyboard, mouse, and printer.
