About Indigo
Indigo Ag is a mission-driven company dedicated to leveraging science and technology to help improve the sustainability and profitability of the agriculture industry. Since 2013, we have pursued innovative ways for science and technology to drive sustainability and profitability in agriculture. With our mission, we are focused on four key principles:
* Helping farmers enhance their profitability and soil health
* Improving the quantity, quality, and traceability of the food available to consumers
* Protecting the environment by reducing and removing harmful greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, while incentivizing sustainable land stewardship practices
* Creating long-term value for our shareholders
Our people build partnerships, explore the science, and engineer the technology to help grow the future of sustainable agriculture. The only way to achieve it is through a unique combination of expertise – from Fortune 500 to academia, soil science and agriculture, to tech start-ups.
Indigo's Biological Products organization develops products based upon our deep understanding of the plant microbiome. The company has commercialized such products for cotton, wheat, barley, corn, soybeans, and rice in North America, Latin America, and Europe under the biotrinsic™ brand. Our R&D and product development teams are working to continue to develop products that address the growing number of abiotic and biotic stresses that crops experience worldwide.
The Bioprocess Engineer will take ownership of mechanical, controls, and support systems for pilot plant and bioprocessing operations, including managing external vendors and partners. Along with the below mentioned responsibilities, this person will lead the optimization of fermentation and DSP processes for scaling, efficiency, and predictability.

Responsibilities

  • Produce microbial technical grade active ingredient (TGAI) for field trials and commercial demand for TGAI manufactured via solid state fermentation (SSF) and downstream processing (DSP) at pilot plant facility
  • Design and perform experimentation to improve yield, quality, and consistency of current SSF + DSP processes for production of microbial TGAI
  • Design and perform small-scale experimentation for new microbial strains to be produced using SSF processes to meet product quality targets
  • Scale up candidate SSF processes from the small scale to the pilot scale
  • Design and perform pilot-scale DSP experimentation to optimize biomass recovery from SSF processes
  • Design and perform long-term stability studies for TGAI produced at the small- and pilot-scales
  • Improve SSF + DSP workflows by researching, scoping, and procuring new equipment and unit ops
  • Manage pilot plant operations including inventory management, chemical management, storage, ordering of consumables and waste disposal
  • Manage the delivery, installation, and commissioning of new equipment
  • Act as technical lead for the pilot plant
  • Schedule and oversee the preventative maintenance for all the equipment and systems at the pilot plant
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and in appropriate cases, repair malfunctioning equipment
  • Maintain appropriate qualifications and certifications with regulatory bodies
  • Track and renew contracts with vendors that provide goods and services to the pilot plant and leverage existing relations with contractors to optimize for cost savings
  • Use strong communication skills (written and verbal) to coordinate with Legal and AP as needed
  • Author process related documentation including batch records, standard operating procedures, and technology transfer documents
  • Hire and train new associates and technicians in all pilot plant processes including production processes, analytics, company systems, data management and analysis, and general operation of the plant

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree of U.S. equivalent in Manufacturing Engineering, Biology, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, Technical Systems Management, or a related field, plus 2 years of professional experience working with microbiology, cell culture, process development or bioprocess engineering in a production environment
  • 2+ years of professional experience in the following:
  • Performing aseptic technique, microbial cultivation, microscopy, and viability assays
  • Conduction and summarizing experimental or routine processes in a biology lab
  • Utilizing downstream processing technologies and unit ops (including milling, sieve characterization, centrifugation, or tangential flow filtration)
  • Follow lab protocols for maintenance of facility equipment and operating systems in a manufacturing facility
