Purpose of Position:

The Work Health and Safety (WHS) Manager provides strategic direction and leadership across the organisation to ensure adherence to compliance and the safety, health and wellbeing of all workers and locations. This position will take the lead to grow and continually strengthen the safety culture. Reporting to both the Mining Division and the Leica Geosystems board from a corporate governance point of view.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The role is focused on enhancing Hexagon’s health and safety management processes. The primary responsibility is to strengthen key health and safety measures continually. This involves a commitment to implementing innovative approaches that significantly improve safety outcomes across the organisation. From an Australian corporate governance perspective, the role entails overseeing Work Health and Safety (WHS) practices, generating board reports, and ensuring adherence to corporate governance standards, particularly for Leica Geosystems, which comprises multiple divisions and locations in Western Australia, Queensland, and New South Wales.

A crucial aspect of the position is building and nurturing strong, trusting relationships throughout the organisation. This includes initiating conversations about safety impacts and best practices, ultimately fostering a positive safety culture. As a coach, you will work closely with employees, groups, and leaders, guiding them through WHS policies and procedures as challenges arise, thus boosting their confidence in executing their responsibilities.

Driving compliance is another key responsibility, ensuring that safety programs and processes maintain a consistent standard for identifying, assessing, and managing risks. The role requires a thorough understanding of regional laws and regulations affecting operational practices. The role ensures that all site locations are equipped with the correct policies, management systems, processes, and procedures to comply fully with WHS legislative and regulatory requirements.

Leadership is essential, as this role provides guidance to employees on interpreting and applying relevant state and federal legislation. A collaborative approach is taken to eliminate or control safety risks by partnering closely with employees, supervisors, and leaders to identify and manage potential hazards effectively. Additionally, the role includes facilitating internal WHS training sessions and preparing comprehensive reports on workplace injuries, incidents, and hazards for leadership and board meetings.

Managing workers’ compensation claims is also a significant duty, which involves liaising with insurers and other stakeholders to ensure legal compliance and timely reporting. The aim is to deliver effective injury management and rehabilitation strategies that enhance worker health, safety, and wellbeing.

Knowledge & Experience:

To excel in this role, relevant tertiary qualifications in workplace health and safety management are essential, alongside a minimum of five years of experience in a senior WHS operational capacity. A strong background in Work Health and Safety legislation, best practices, and standards is required, along with extensive experience in managing safety systems daily. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are critical, as well as the ability to influence, coach, and engage stakeholders effectively.

The candidate should possess a broad skill set in WHS, including auditing, risk management, investigations, systems implementation, and injury management. Experience with incident investigation methodologies, particularly ICAM, is desirable, along with a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Familiarity with WHS corporate governance requirements across Western Australia, Queensland, and New South Wales is necessary, and experience in the Asia-Pacific region, specifically in Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia, would be an added advantage.
