The Senior Director, Controller will oversee the company’s accounting operations and be responsible for building and maintaining the systems, processes, and team needed to operate with public-company discipline. This leader will ensure accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with U.S. GAAP, government contracting requirements, and future SEC reporting obligations.

The ideal candidate has prior public company controller experience, thrives in a high-growth environment, and can balance hands-on execution with strategic leadership.

This position will report to the Chief Financial Officer and is based in Herndon, Virginia

As the Senior Director, Controller, your main responsibilities will be:
  • Lead all aspects of accounting, including general ledger, revenue recognition, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and fixed assets.
  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process with accuracy, timeliness, and transparency.
  • Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP and ensure compliance with government contract accounting rules (CAS/FAR).
  • Design, implement, and maintain robust internal controls, accounting policies, and financial systems.
  • Partner with the CFO and executive leadership to support capital raising, M&A, and IPO readiness.
  • Oversee external audits, tax filings, and compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • Build and develop a high-performing accounting team capable of scaling with company growth.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, contracts, and program management to support growth and ensure financial accuracy.
  • Drive automation and system improvements to enhance efficiency and reporting.
  • Act as a key finance leader and trusted advisor to the executive team.
Your skills and qualifications:
Essential education and experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA required.
  • 15+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant tenure as a Controller at a public company (or with a company through IPO).
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge (U.S. GAAP, SEC reporting, revenue recognition, stock-based compensation).
  • Demonstrated ability to scale accounting functions in a high-growth, complex environment.
  • Track record of building and mentoring high-performing teams.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and communication ability.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, mission-driven culture.
Desirable:​​​​​​
  • Experience in defense technology or space technology companies, with an understanding of business models in this sector.
  • Experience with government contracting and compliance (CAS/FAR/DFARS).
  • Direct experience with the IPO process.
