Unacast is a global leader in location intelligence, transforming our understanding of human activity in the physical world. We leverage machine learning and AI to extract valuable, privacy-friendly insights from location data, delivering unique intelligence to companies across various industries. We're a thriving company with a strong client base, yet we maintain the startup spirit where your work truly makes an impact—join us as we enter an exciting phase of growth and innovation!

We are looking for a Software Engineer with Data experience to help build the most accurate people movement insights

We are a location data company that helps businesses build better products and make smarter decisions using real-world location data.

This role is in the Turbine Business Unit of Unacast, the location processing platform for Telcos, which comprises models and algorithms we offer to Telcos to turn their raw signal data into people movement insights. Today our models help Telcos create insights they monetise by helping their customers answer questions like: how many people went to a music concert, how many people took a specific train or what means of travel people used on a specific road segment. We are constantly adding new data models and using the best of ML/AI to improve the mobility insights we can create using Telco data. You will be an active participant in driving the future development of Turbine.

This is an on-site hybrid position (with 4 days in the week working in our Oslo office, or more if you want!). In case of a change of location, Unacast will not be able to handle Visa application support or relocation.

Our main office is on Karl Johans Gate in the heart of Oslo, where we meet every week with our international colleagues, both for work and for socializing. Our welcoming office has a focus on comfort, and this is reflected in the surroundings. Being part of Unacast means being part of a friendly and efficient workplace, with opportunities to grow and advance within the company.

Why is the “Software Engineer”
role critical to us?

As a Software Developer, you will design and develop robust data pipelines and scalable software systems. You’ll work with massive datasets, tackling unique challenges working with telco data that few companies in the world can offer.

Beyond technical skills, we’re looking for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, proactively contributes to team goals, and doesn’t wait to be told what to do but instead takes initiative to make things happen.

How will you spend your time at Unacast Turbine?

  • Build and maintain data processing pipelines, ensuring performance, scalability, and reliability
  • Work closely with data scientists to deliver clean, efficient code and workflows.
  • Work with Google Cloud and AWS.
  • Help process terabytes of data daily, creating innovative solutions for our platform and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with Telco data
  • Promote software development best practices such as CI/CD, test-driven development, code review, and Agile methodologies
  • Write and optimize BigQuery SQL queries to process and analyze large-scale datasets efficiently
  • Clearly document data processes, insights, and recommendations to ensure transparency and usability
  • Contribute to ideas and feedback to improve data processing

You are just the person we’ve been looking for, if you have:

  • A degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • At least 2 years of experience in software development, ideally in data-driven domains.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and good knowledge of SQL.
  • Familiarity with concepts like Pipeline Orchestration, Data Architecture, Data Ingestion, Data and Infrastructure Observability and Monitoring
  • Familiarity with tools like Airflow, BigQuery, Google Cloud, and Apache Beam is a plus but not required.
  • Strong knowledge of *Nix systems, including administration, troubleshooting, and scripting.
  • Experience working in Agile teams and an understanding of collaborative development practices.
  • A problem solving and positive mindset with a “can do” attitude to tackle challenges together with your team.
  • Adaptable and full of curiosity - We are a startup, so things can change fast and you need to be agile and proactive on this journey
  • Experience working with telco data and Java (nice to have)
  • Experience working with Infrastructure as Code (nice to have)

Preferred tech stack to be comfortable with:

  • Core Tools: Python, Java, Airflow, Bash/Makefile, Docker, GitHub Actions, BigQuery, Google Cloud

What we offer:

  • A passionate, intelligent and fun team
  • Impactful work on unique, cutting-edge solutions.
  • Hybrid work location (with 2-3 days/week in the office).
  • Professional development support (including regular hackathons and 3 “learn-something-new” days per year).
  • Scandinavian work culture with flexible working hours
  • Competitive salary
  • An international work environment with colleagues from around the world
  • Six weeks of vacation
  • Free lunches, snacks, and quality coffee at the office
  • Paid phone subscription, high quality phone and computer, paid gym membership, sock allowance, insurance and more
