Avionics Engineer I

All Orbits, All Planets - Join us on our journey

Gilmour Space is the leading Australian rocket company, pioneering next-generation hybrid propulsion technologies for small satellite launch vehicles.

Are you a creative and experienced Avionics Engineer I looking for a dynamic role where your skills will make a real impact? Well now’s your chance! We’re building orbital launch vehicles in Australia — and avionics is at the centre of that effort. Power systems, onboard computers, sensors, networks and control systems all need to work together in demanding environments. As an Avionics Engineer I, you’ll join a high-performing team working on real flight hardware and software from day one. This role is designed for early-career or graduate engineers who want hands-on experience across the full engineering lifecycle — from requirements and design through integration, verification, testing and operations.

You’ll learn quickly, take on increasing responsibility, and contribute directly to systems that fly.

How you will contribute to our mission in getting Australia to space:

The below is designed to give you an idea of the role you will play. There will be many more exciting and innovative things to do:

  • Contribute as part of a team of Avionics Engineers delivering avionics systems
  • Support requirements definition, design activities, reviews
  • Assist with integration of avionics units and subsystems including power, compute, sensors, communications and control interfaces
  • Support verification and validation (V&V) activities at unit and subsystem level
  • Develop and execute test procedures, capture results and assist in closing out requirements
  • Support environmental, functional and integration testing campaigns
  • Assist with troubleshooting, investigations and corrective actions
  • Contribute to concept studies, trade studies and COTS evaluations under guidance of senior engineers
  • Support Research and Development activities and production engineering tasks
  • Coordinate with Mechanical, Propulsion, Manufacturing and Production teams
  • Engage with suppliers and subcontractors as required
  • Ensure engineering activities are documented and conducted in accordance with company policies and procedures

Mandatory Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics, Computer Systems, Mechatronics Engineering or relevant qualification
  • Ability to operate effectively in dynamic, fast-paced environments
  • Demonstrated resilience and willingness to learn in high-pressure situations
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team
  • NV1 Security Clearance eligible preferred.

Desired Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

We recognise you may not meet all of the below, but don’t let that deter you. We are always looking for hard workers to join our team, so what are you waiting for? Let’s send Australia to space!

  • PCB development of analogue, digital and mixed-signal circuits
  • Hands-on electronics testing, troubleshooting and debugging
  • Embedded software development (baremetal, RTOS, embedded Linux)
  • FPGA/SoC hardware and software development
  • Integration and verification of avionics units
  • Electronics analysis including circuit simulation, power and thermal assessments
  • RF fundamentals including antenna design, link budgets or EMI testing
  • Systems Engineering practises
  • Space or aerospace engineering standards (e.g. GSFC-STD-7000A, SMC-S-016, RCC 319, DO-254, DO-178)
  • Experience in space, aerospace or automotive industries
  • Exposure to waterfall and/or agile development frameworks

The ideal candidate is motivated, curious, practical and eager to build real systems, not just analyse them on paper.

How to Apply:

Applicants must be an Australian Citizen/Permanent Resident or have an appropriate Australian work visa or work entitlements.
