Overview



We are seeking a full-time Senior Mechanical Designer at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for driving mechanical solutions by providing exceptional CAD modeling and drafting support, documentation, testing and other technical support within a team-oriented environment.

Essential Functions

  • Support completion of complex mechanical designs for Garmin products
  • Independently complete derivative projects and basic mechanical design projects with minimal to no guidance
  • Master CAD-user able to complete the most difficult tasks
  • Mockup/test basic mechanical systems to verify compliance with design requirements
  • Collaborate and add value through active participation in design reviews, providing comments and suggestions on mechanical engineering designs
  • Possess strong knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining, etc. with the ability to apply knowledge towards complex mechanical designs
  • Manage cost tracking activities on tooling, part cost, and design time
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills with the ability to share information to enable others within the immediate team to achieve objectives and make business decisions
  • Demonstrate familiarity with Industry and Garmin product qualification tests and is able to specify and execute test plans
  • Work under only very general direction with good risk discernment while demonstrating a sense of urgency, commitment, and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion
  • Mentor and provide guidance to one or more less experienced Mechanical Designers (1 & 2) and participate in recruiting activities as assigned
  • Provide technical input on designs and can independently update mechanical designs per requirements
  • Provide reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem solving techniques and ability to find technical root cause
  • Offer process improvement suggestions and author new procedures

Basic Qualifications

  • 2-year technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Manufacturing Engineering Technology AND a minimum of 8 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • Demonstrated proficient knowledge and utilization of engineering tools necessary for successful performance of the essential functions of this job description
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills

Desired Qualifications

  • 4-year technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Technology or Manufacturing Engineering Technology AND a minimum of 6 years relevant experience
  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
  • Previous experience working in a team environment
  • Previous work or internship experience in design, particularly for consumer products
  • Experience using Onshape and/or SolidWorks CAD systems that includes surface modeling and sheet metal designs
  • Experience with SolidWorks Product Data Management (PDM) system or similar document management system
  • Experience with testing of products to verify compliance and design requirements
  • Mechanical systems repair or troubleshooting experience
  • Electronic packaging design experience
