We are seeking a full-time Lead Database Administrator at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for leading administration of technology by contributing expertise in researching new technologies and proposing cost effective solutions. This role also facilitates team discussions and plans and contributes innovative suggestions within the area of discipline.
Essential Functions
- Analyzes existing database systems and recommends improvements and tunes and optimizes database objects when necessary
- Configures and administers enterprise SQL Server environments
- Collaborates with supervisors and security champions to establish database security structures and ensure SOX compliance
- Creates/maintains database access systems including tables, indexes, views, stored procedures, and triggers
- Administers database replication between servers, across Local Area Network and Wide Area Network
- Provides 24x7 on-call support
- Provides significant contributions to defining team roadmap and priorities
- Develops reliable solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity
- Demonstrates broad understanding of Garmin's business model, including Engineering, Operations, Finance, Sales, and Marketing
- Mentors and guides less-experienced Database Administrators
- Researches new technologies and proposes cost effective solutions
- Leads major incident troubleshooting involving multiple disciplines
- Provides innovation within the area of expertise
- Facilitates team discussions and meetings
- Recognized as an expert in the assigned discipline at Garmin and applies extensive technical expertise and analysis to initiatives
- Contributes input to broader technology solutions outside of discipline
- Serves as a leader of change
- Demonstrates professional maturity through giving and receiving constructive feedback
- Addresses conflict effectively without appreciable oversight
- Coordinates department level non-project changes
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business or another related field AND a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience
- Proficient with SQL Server (up though 2025)
- Proficient with perfoming upgrades of SQL Server and troubleshooting performance issues
- Proficient with SQL Server Always On
- Proficient with OS migrations related to Windows
- Experience with custom scripting, ideally Linux
- Demonstrated ability to implement new technologies effectively
- Strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in a small team setting
- Consistently demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work documentation and organization
- Postgres
- Experience with automation, especially with Windows and SQL Server OS Patching
- Previous experience working in a team environment
