Overview
We are seeking a full-time Team Leader Flight Controls Systems in either our Chandler, AZ or Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for directing and coordinating a flight controls systems engineering team responsible for development of algorithms and system architectures for autopilot and flight director systems.
Essential Functions
- Enables safety design and ensures hardware and software requirements fulfill systems & safety requirements
- Directly supervise various levels of team members by setting the tone for the team environment and providing individualized coaching, training and mentoring
- Enables development of models of electromechanical servomechanisms or airframe models using customer supplied aerodynamic data and models
- Serves in leadership capacity for development of systems requirements for autopilot/flight director systems including system performance, system interfaces, architecture, and algorithms
- Directs development of autopilot and flight director algorithms for autopilot and flight director modes and conveys algorithm requirements to software teams
- Works closely with design engineering teams to convey AFCS requirements for hardware designs
- Leads team to develop autopilot and flight director monitors and limiters in consideration of system safety
- Understands and considers design assurance levels in the AFCS design and leads team to develop thorough, complete and unambiguous AFCS system requirements documents
- Directs and enables appropriate team members to provide customer interface to flight control peers at OEM customers to supports their analysis, ITF or Iron Bird activities as necessary
- Provides oversight on development of validation/verification test plans and conducting bench tests to validate correct system implementation in support of FAA certification
- Coordinates with flight operations at OEM or Garmin for AFCS development flight test, reviews, or supports development of flight test plans in support of scheduled flight tests
- Participate in recruiting activities, interview, hire, train, evaluate performance for the team, and plan/assign/direct work
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Math, Physics, Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR a minimum of 10 years relevant experience
- Experience using MatLab or Simulink design tools
- Fluency and understanding of C programming language
- Demonstrated understanding of system architectures and the effects on the control system
- Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
- Must be positive, detail oriented, organized, team oriented and a driven problem solver, multi-tasker, and self-starter with the ability to prioritize and lead in a fast paced, deadline-driven environment
Desired Qualifications
- 8+ years relevant experience
- Previous leadership or mentorship experience
- Software development experience, including understanding of DO-178C requirements
- Avionics hardware development experience
- Pilot’s License or demonstrated knowledge of piloting skills and procedures
