Overview



We are seeking a full-time Data Engineer 2 in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for contributing to data development and operational stability of the Big Data ecosystems.

Essential Functions

  • Provide technical input to feature development plans and concept documents
  • Contribute to design and implementation of data pipelines to support data analysis and modeling

  • Collaborate with data scientists to design and implement document parsing processes to support information retrieval solutions

  • Collaborate with data scientists to design and implement data collection processes

  • Understand production and operations issues as they relate to engineering
  • Exemplify Garmin's Mission Statement/Quality Policy and proactively improve image/culture
  • Develop scalable, extensible solution architectures leveraging contemporary big-data technologies in an evolving operational framework
  • Partner with team lead to identify technical requirements and alternatives to accomplish projects
  • Participate in design, code, test, maintenance, enhance and decommission phases throughout software life cycle to contribute technical expertise and to identify issues
  • Participate in and help guide research POCs, including design, coding, and performance and efficacy measurement
  • Develop solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity/creativity and provide innovation within area of expertise
  • Demonstrate broad understanding of Garmin's business model, including Engineering, Operations, Finance, Sales and Marketing
  • Contribute to and triages major incident troubleshooting involving multiple disciplines
  • Apply technical expertise and analysis to initiatives and provide input to broader technology solutions outside of discipline
  • Provide 24x7 on call support

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business or related field AND a minimum of 2 years relevant experience
  • Excellent academics with demonstrated ability to apply learned knowledge
  • Experience using Hadoop and various components
  • Experience tuning and optimizing ETL jobs to perform at scale
  • Experience writing complex queries combining data from disparate systems
  • Able to implement new technologies effectively and consistently demonstrates quality/effectiveness in work documentation and organization
  • Strong/effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills in a small team setting

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a team environment
  • JAVA or high level object oriented programming experience
  • Experience with real-time streaming technologies such as Kafka
