Overview



We are seeking a full-time Senior Flight Systems Engineer in either our Olathe, KS or Chandler, AZ location. In this role, you will be responsible for providing leadership for the development of models and systems requirements for autopilot and flight director systems.

Essential Functions

  • Leads development of models of electromechanical servomechanisms or airframe models using customer supplied aerodynamic data and models
  • Serves in leadership capacity for development of systems requirements for autopilot/flight director systems including system performance, system interfaces, architecture, and algorithms
  • Develops autopilot and flight director algorithms for autopilot and flight director modes and conveys algorithm requirements to software teams
  • Works closely with software and design engineering teams to convey AFCS requirements for hardware designs
  • Develops autopilot and flight director monitors and limiters in consideration of system safety
  • Understands and considers design assurance levels in the AFCS design
  • Develops thorough, complete, and unambiguous AFCS system requirements documents
  • Develops and documents system interface in ICD format
  • Provides primary customer interface to flight control peers at OEM customers and supports their analysis, ITF or Iron Bird activities as necessary
  • Develops validation and verification test plans and conducts bench tests to validate correct system implementation in support of FAA certification
  • Coordinates with flight operations at OEM or Garmin for AFCS development flight test, reviews or develops flight test plans in support of scheduled flight tests

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Math, Physics, Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • Experience using MatLab or Simulink design tools
  • Fluency and understanding of C programming language
  • Demonstrated understanding of system architectures and the effects on the control system
  • Pilot’s License or demonstrated knowledge of piloting skills and procedures
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Desired Qualifications

  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
  • Software development experience, including understanding of DO-178C requirements
  • Avionics hardware development experience
