Overview
We are seeking a full-time Senior Mechanical Engineer in our Olathe, KS location on the Garmin Labs team. This team is our internal product Research & Development team. From kids wearables and hybrid watches to the latest lidar and sonar systems, we are in constant pursuit of new markets and cutting edge technologies. As a senior mechanical engineer, you will support these product and technology concepts throughout the exploration stages until transferring them to the product team. At times you will also support product development through to mass production.
Essential Functions
- Master CAD-user including the completion of complex mechanical designs with Solidworks and/or Onshape
- Must be passionate, enthusiastic, have an inventor mindset and enjoy exploration and hands-on work
- Explore innovative mechanical concepts and complete complex mechanical designs
- Knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining, material requirements, material performance, material limitations, etc.
- Specify test plans, mock up and test complex mechanical systems with complex performance requirements to validate and verify compliance with design requirements
- Manage basic tradeoffs, determine risk mitigation plans, determine project goal/objective feasibility, provide technical input to product development plans/concept documents, and drive process vendors to evaluate complex mechanical designs and understand risk
- Lead explorations of new technologies and make estimates on moderately complex mechanical designs including: tooling, part cost, and design time
- Knowledge of Industry and Garmin product qualification tests (environmental and others)
- Provide reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem solving techniques and offer process improvements and author new procedures
- Mentor less-experienced Mechanical Engineers (1&2)
- Overseas travel as required
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Master CAD-user (Solidworks/Onshape) - able to complete the most difficult tasks
- Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
Desired Qualifications
- Previous experience in an exploratory / skunkworks / startup type role
- Electronic packaging design experience
