Head of Embedded Systems (Satellite Bus)
GalaxEye Space
Job Description
GalaxEye aims to shape the future of Satellite Image Acquisition, providing the most meaningful datasets, thus helping businesses and governments make data-driven decisions based on insights from satellite imagery. We design and build advanced remote-sensing satellites and develop value-added services for geospatial analytics and infrastructure customers.
You will lead the Embedded Systems function end-to-end—architecture, firmware/software, and embedded hardware—for GalaxEye’s satellite bus. This includes ownership of bus avionics such as the On-Board Computer (OBC/OBDH), Electrical Power System (EPS), ADCS/GNC controllers, TT&C/communications radios, data-handling, payload interfaces, and fault detection/isolation/recovery (FDIR). You’ll set the technical roadmap, grow and mentor the team, and ensure our platforms are reliable, power-efficient, and flight-ready.
Responsibilities:
- Own the bus-level embedded architecture: define system/software architecture across MCU/SoC platforms, drivers, and peripherals; establish standards and best practices for all satellite bus avionics.
- Requirements Management: Lead Subsystem ConOps and requirements hierarchy; flow down from subsystems to component with full traceability and change control.
- Team leadership: hire, mentor, and lead firmware/embedded engineers; drive planning, resourcing, and delivery to schedule and quality.
- Hands-on technical leadership: board bring-up, low-level drivers, RTOS/Embedded Linux, bootloaders, diagnostics; integration with OBC, EPS, ADCS/GNC, TT&C, and payload interfaces.
- Interface & documentation: create/maintain ICDs and timing diagrams across bus subsystems and payloads; manage command/telemetry schemas and data pipelines.
- Sensor & component strategy: evaluate/select health, navigation, and timing sensors/components; manage redundancy/cross-strapping and component lifecycle.
- Quality, safety & reliability: lead V&V (HIL/SIL, flatsat/bench testing), unit/integration tests, CI for firmware; FMEA/fault protection, watchdogs, safe-mode and in-orbit update strategies.
- Budgets & performance: ensure designs meet power, data-rate, latency, and reliability targets at the satellite bus level.
- Standards & compliance: align with aerospace/avionics processes (e.g., DO-178C/DO-254/DO-278 or equivalent) and space mission practices where applicable.
- Cross-functional collaboration: partner with EE/ME, ADCS/EPS/OBC, Comms, Payload, Product, and Ops; lead design reviews; manage vendors/partners.
- Leading the efforts in Creating & Maintaining Detailed documentation regarding the satellite bus Embedded Systems.
Requirements
Must Haves
- 8+ years in embedded systems (firmware + hardware integration) for complex, safety/mission-critical products (aerospace/robotics/automotive/mechatronics); 3+ years leading teams.
- Strong C/C++ for MCUs/SoCs; experience with RTOS (e.g., FreeRTOS/Zephyr) and/or Embedded Linux.
- Proven board bring-up and lab debug (JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes/logic analyzers); deep understanding of timing/clocking and common interfaces (I²C/SPI/UART/CAN/Ethernet, etc.).
- Delivered systems end-to-end (architecture → validation → production/flight) with clear ownership at the avionics/satellite bus level.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management.
- Strong debugging and analytical skills, verification and validation of embedded systems
- Solid understanding of timing principles, including clock domain crossing and timing closure.
Good to Haves
- Familiarity with DO-178C/DO-254/DO-278; exposure to ECSS/NASA practices for spacecraft avionics.
- Experience with STM32, Microchip/DS-PIC, TI, Renesas, or ARM Cortex-M/A; RISC-V exposure a plus.
- Test-driven development and CI/CD for firmware; HIL/SIL and flatsat environments.
- Layered architecture for non-AUTOSAR systems; middleware and driver frameworks.
- Designing for space environments (radiation effects, thermal, EMC) and fault-tolerant, redundant architectures.
Traits We Value
- Systems thinker with strong analytical and debugging skills.
- Inclusive leader who can mentor a diverse, distributed team. Someone who can bring in the culture of ownership and responsibility to the team while by giving them technical and creative freedom with necessary guidance.
- Clear, concise communicator who builds trust across hardware and software.
- Ready to learn new concepts, stay up-to-date with the state-of-the-art in the field and implement them
- Ability to work within deadlines and dynamic projects
