Lead Space Systems Engineer
GalaxEye Space
Job Description
GalaxEye aims to shape the future of Satellite Image Acquisition, providing the most meaningful datasets, thus helping businesses and governments make data-driven decisions based on insights from satellite imagery. We design and build advanced remote-sensing satellites and develop value-added services for geospatial analytics and infrastructure customers.
As Lead Space Systems Engineer, you will own the systems engineering lifecycle for an entire mission—from concept and ConOps through design, AIT/IV&V, launch, and on-orbit operations. You’ll be the principal technical integrator across satellite bus and payload, driving requirements, interfaces, budgets, risks, verification, and technical trade-offs. You’ll partner closely with the Program Manager, Engineering Heads (Satellite bus and Payload Heads), and Mission Operations to deliver mission success.
Responsibilities:
- Mission definition: Lead ConOps, mission architecture, and requirements hierarchy; flow down to subsystems with full traceability and change control.
- Budgets & performance: Own mass, power, data-rate, thermal, pointing/ADCS, and reliability budgets; drive system trades to meet mission KPIs.
- Interfaces & configuration: Create and maintain ICDs, data schemas, timing and command/telemetry interfaces; run CCBs and configuration management.
- Technical integration: Orchestrate cross-discipline design integration (bus ↔ payload ↔ ground segment), including link budgets and data pipelines.
- Verification & validation: Author the V&V/IVVQ plan; build test matrices; lead flatsat/HIL/SIL, environmental (TVAC, vibe, EMI/EMC), functional, and end-to-end tests; manage Program Milestone readiness (eg PDR, CDR).
- Risk, reliability & safety: Drive hazard analysis, FMEA/FTA, FDIR strategies, and redundancy/cross-strapping; own system reliability goals.
- AIT leadership: Plan assembly/integration flows, procedures, and test scripts; resolve test anomalies with rapid root-cause and closure.
- Ground & ops: Define ground segment and mission ops requirements; coordinate LEOP, commissioning, calibration, and in-orbit validation plans.
- Suppliers & partners: Lead make/buy trades, vendor selection, and performance management for critical avionics and payload interfaces.
- Team leadership: Mentor other systems engineers; set crisp deliverables and cadences; elevate engineering quality and documentation standards.
Requirements
Must Haves
- 6–10+ years in spacecraft/space systems or comparable complex systems; at least one program taken through CDR and integration (flight heritage ideal).
- Hands-on systems engineering: requirements decomposition/traceability, ICDs, budgets, risk management, and V&V planning/execution.
- Strong cross-discipline literacy: OBC/OBDH, EPS, ADCS/GNC, TT&C/Comms, payload integration, and ground segment basics.
- Excellent communication; able to turn ambiguity into clear technical plans and lead multi-discipline reviews.
- Strong debugging and analytical skills, verification and validation of systems
Good to Haves
- Experience with smallsat/CubeSat architectures and flatsat benches; environmental and EMC test campaigns.
- Knowledge of reliability in space environments (radiation, thermal, EMC) and fault-tolerant architectures/FDIR.
- Familiarity with ISRO/ECSS/NASA lifecycle, mission assurance, and flight readiness processes.
- Launch vehicle integration exposure (separation system ICDs, environments, constraints).
- Prior startup experience or greenfield mission bringing up processes from scratch.
Traits We Value
- Systems thinker with strong analytical and debugging skills.
- Calm under test pressure; exceptional debugging and synthesis skills.
- Inclusive leader who can mentor a diverse, distributed team. Someone who can bring in the culture of ownership and responsibility to the team while by giving them technical and creative freedom with necessary guidance.
- Clear, concise communicator who builds trust across hardware, software, and operations.
- Ready to learn new concepts, stay up-to-date with the state-of-the-art in the field and implement them
- Ability to work within deadlines and dynamic projects
