Senior Design Engineer

At Frontier Aerospace, the Senior Design Engineer role is one of the key technical roles. Individuals in this role will be responsible to direct, review, and validate engineered solutions to assure that design intent meets customer, functional, programmatic, and business level needs. A successful candidate will exhibit leadership qualities, have intimate knowledge of engineering best practices, and lead by example.

They will also strive for continue learning and understand how their actions contribute to moving the needs of the business forward.

Responsibilities:

  • Guide the generation of and produce production fidelity detailed component drawings that meet functional and manufacturability, and customer requirements.
  • Apply principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics to components and subsystems to create functional and reliable products that operate safely.
  • Direct the creation of, and create engineering drawings and specifications for components, assemblies, and systems.
  • Ensures adherence to industry standards, process, and best practices through checking of engineering drawings, models, and specifications.
  • Interface with vendors and in-house fabrication/assembly teams during design, prototype builds, and hardware validation testing.
  • Employ fully defined dimensioning schemes, use GD&T and statistics to ensure cross product compatibility, and verify mechanical fit using tolerance stack-up analysis tools.
  • Disposition non-conformances, and Material Reviews, by providing sound engineering rationale, performing root cause analyses, and appropriately evaluating technical/schedule/cost risks.
  • Direct and perform technical support for production and development through engineering change orders to make design changes that improve producibility and reliability.
  • Verify that product definition is fully defined, appropriately dimensions, technically sound, producible, conforms to internal and external requirements, and has been evaluated for cost savings opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with all disciplines to direct the generation of, and present conceptual design, preliminary design, and critical design packages.
  • Serves as mentor for junior design engineers in areas including engineering, communication, leadership, and professionalism.
  • Additional responsibilities may be levied on the Senior Design Engineer to meet critical business needs and operational deadlines. Additional duties can include hardware assembly, validation testing, engineering planning, hardware kitting, courier activities and more.

Relevant Experience and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
  • 4+ years of professional 3D CAD design experience (Creo Parametric and Windchill PLM preferred) OR Master's Degree with 3+ years of professional 3D CAD design experience (Creo Parametric and Windchill PLM preferred).
  • Deep knowledge of aerospace material, treatments, and processes.
  • Skilled at designing parts, tooling, and test fixtures necessary to build rocket engine hardware.
  • Effectively direct the design of parts, tooling, and test fixtures necessary to build rocket engine hardware.
  • Effectively direct the design of components, assemblies, tooling, and test fixtures necessary to build propulsion products, propulsion systems, and supporting equipment.
  • Deep knowledge and familiarity with all aspects of GD&T implementation and analysis (ASME Y14.5).
  • Must be an excellent communicator and be adept at presenting technical information to audiences that cater to groups of people with varying degrees of knowledge or expertise.
  • Dynamic team player who can work effectively and proactively on cross-functional teams.

Employment Criteria:

Pay: Annual Salary $90,000 - $125,000 DOE

Note about pay range: Pay range for this job level is a general guideline for California and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.

Job Schedule: 9/80: Employees work 9 out of every 14 days – totaling 80 hours worked – and have every other Friday off
