Full job description

The Senior Harness Design Engineer is responsible for the modeling and drawings for wiring harnesses, support brackets, electronic enclosures, machined parts, and integrating them on an electrical propulsion system. Tasks include designing spacecraft components, supporting analysis, production and test. This role requires strong technical expertise in aerospace harness design, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work closely with electrical, mechanical, propulsion, and systems engineering teams.

You will own harness designs from concept through flight qualification, ensuring compliance with electrical, mechanical, thermal, and environmental requirements for high‑reliability aerospace applications.

Responsibilities and Duties.

  • Design and develop electrical wiring harnesses for propulsion systems, power processing units (PPUs), thrusters, valves, sensors, and spacecraft interfaces.
  • Create detailed harness drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and installation documentation.
  • Define harness architecture including wire selection, shielding, grounding, connector selection, and routing strategies.
  • Select connectors, backshells, and wire that meet aerospace requirements
  • Ensure harness designs meet electrical performance, EMI/EMC, thermal, vibration, and shock requirements.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical, Thermal, Stress, Dynamics, Propulsion, and Systems Engineering teams to ensure robust integration with flight hardware.
  • Support design trades involving connector types, cable construction, routing paths, and strain relief methods.
  • Create and release harness fabrication and installation drawings.
  • Generate electrical schematics to support both flight and qualification designs
  • Provide technical input to support environmental qualification (vibration, shock, thermal vacuum).
  • Support harness fabrication, assembly, and inspection activities, including working with manufacturing and suppliers.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve harness‑related issues during build, test, and integration.
  • Prepare and review engineering documentation including drawings, bills of material (BOMs), specifications, and test documentation.
  • Participate in internal and customer design reviews (PDR, CDR, FRR) and ensure designs meet customer requirements.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • CAD design and drawing release preferably SolidWorks. Experience with SolidWorks Routing/Electrical software preferred.
  • GD&T (ASME Y14.5) experience and performing tolerance analysis.
  • Support manufacturing team through technical exchange and troubleshooting of wire related issues/non-conformances
  • Understanding and Experience with IPC/WHMA-A-620, NASA 8739.4 and/or SMC/Mil specifications for wiring harnesses.
  • Ability to interpret and create complex electrical wiring diagrams and electrical schematics.
  • Hands on experience fabricating, installing and testing harnessing assemblies.
  • Material Review Board certification for dispositioning and troubleshooting wiring nonconformances
  • Knowledge or material selection aerospace applications
  • Ability to select connectors, shielding, wire type and other harness components based on customer and electrical engineering requirements
  • Work with vendors and subcontractors to outsource harness production and specify build materials
  • Understanding and application of EMI/RFI and harness shielding practices.
  • Candidates must be able to comply with the federally mandated requirements of U.S. export control and ITAR compliance laws, which require proof that the candidate is a U.S. person.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
  • 4+ years of experience designing electrical wiring harnesses for aerospace, spacecraft, or high‑reliability systems.
