Job Summary

The Senior Director Controller maintains responsibility for a variety of activities pertaining to all entities’ accounting cycles. This includes preparing periodic financial statements and reports, performing month-end and year-end procedures, ensuring local tax compliance, and managing relationships with key finance or operational teams while ensuring accurate financial transactions. The Senior Director Controller is also a key business partner to Operations and must be able to handle the complexity and speed associated with operations and intercompany transactions. Cannabis experience is strongly recommended for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, implements, and oversees overall accounting strategy and daily accounting operations.
  • Takes responsibility for accounts payable/receivable, cash receipts, general ledger, payroll, utilities, treasury, budgeting, cash forecasting, revenue, expenditure, variance analysis, capital assets, and trust account statement reconciliations, as well as check runs, fixed asset activity, debt activity, etc.
  • Sets up and monitors the accounting Key Performance Indicators.
  • Regularly produces financial reports or statements.
  • Adheres to proper accounting methods, policies, and principles, as well as encourages other employees to adhere to standards.
  • Recruits, hires, and trains new employees.
  • Motivates accounting staff members while supervising and delegating departmental tasks.
  • Responsible for filing sales tax returns and supporting tax filings.
  • Collaborates on system implementations for Enterprise Resource Planning software.
  • Handles 1099 tax reporting supervision.
  • Assists with the preparation of the annual budget process, monthly budget variance analysis, and monthly financial reports.
  • Performs and oversees annual audits.
  • Drives continuous improvement by identifying gaps in processes, prepares recommendations and procedural implementations to improve efficiency as well as spending.
  • Evaluates, develops, and improves departmental controls, systems, and procedures to increase accuracy and overall efficiency.
  • Ensures all major projects, including month-end and year-end reports, are completed accurately and on time.
  • Assures all accounting processes align with GAAP and current financial legislation.
  • Analyzes financial data and creates reports for management, stakeholders, and external parties such as vendors or lenders.
  • Maintains accurate and complete financial records and participates in audits or reconciliations as needed.
  • Assists other departments as they develop strategies, establish objectives, and make decisions that could have a financial impact on the business.
  • Stays informed about the latest developments in the finance industry overall.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Commerce, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • CPA or CMA certification is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 or more years of related experience, including previous accounting and/or financial experience; professional designation is a plus; public accounting.
  • Experience with Microsoft Business Central
  • Odoo inventory and accounting preferred
  • Significant experience with QBO, FloQast, Gaccon, and Excel
  • Strong business and financial acumen and a willingness to have an impact on the business.
  • Specific experience with local tax regulations and tax incentives a plus.
  • Self-starter, driven, and focused; strong attention to detail and well organized.
  • Systems thinker with demonstrated process improvement skills and knowledge of accounting best practices, standards, and principles.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, written, oral, and presentation; communicates in a clear, concise, and organized manner.
  • An active listener who listens to others to obtain information.
  • Proven experience building strong relationships with others, including peers, management, external providers, and business partners.
  • A sense of urgency while demonstrating the ability to manage time and prioritize activities as well as resources to ensure departmental standards are met consistently.

Salary is dependant upon location and experience.
