Senior Systems Engineer, Autonomous Sensing and Safety

Engineer the Sensory Core of a Driverless Platform

Join an advanced autonomous vehicle technology organization building a production grade self driving platform that combines artificial intelligence with automotive hardware. This company develops and licenses a scalable autonomous driving system used across robotaxis, commercial fleets, and consumer vehicles. With real world deployments and a focus on commercial readiness, the team is committed to delivering autonomy that is not only capable, but demonstrably safe.

Your Role in the Mission

As a Senior Systems Engineer focused on sensing and safety, you will play a central role in shaping how the autonomous driving system perceives and understands the world. You will guide the definition, architecture, integration, and validation of the sensor suite and its interaction with localization and perception modules.

This role sits at the intersection of hardware and software. You will work across sensor hardware, perception, localization, vehicle systems, safety engineering, and product teams to ensure that sensing and compute platforms operate reliably under real world conditions and align with rigorous industry standards. Your work will directly contribute to the system safety case and the safe deployment of driverless technology.

What You Will Own

  • System Requirements and Architecture: Lead system level requirements development and management, including authoring and structuring requirements in tools such as Jama. Define architecture and integration strategies for LiDAR, cameras, radar, IMU, and compute platforms as they support localization and perception.
  • Sensor Performance and Safety Characterization: Drive hazard analysis, risk assessments, and performance evaluations for autonomy sensors. Translate safety findings into actionable technical requirements and measurable performance thresholds.
  • Cross Functional Integration: Partner closely with sensor hardware teams to support component selection, characterization, and system integration. Establish safety methodologies and validation criteria from early design through deployment.
  • Interface Definition and Validation: Collaborate with perception and localization software teams to define system interfaces, performance metrics, failure modes, and validation strategies.
  • Safety Case Contribution: Develop and support structured safety arguments related to sensing and residual risk, ensuring evidence is complete and defensible.
  • Test Coverage Strategy: Define and quantify validation coverage requirements to ensure robust system performance across environmental and operational conditions.
  • Root Cause Leadership: Investigate complex, cross disciplinary integration issues discovered during testing, and drive them to resolution.
  • Technical Mentorship: Provide technical guidance across teams and support the development of junior engineers as needed.

What You Bring

  • Deep knowledge of autonomous vehicle sensors including LiDAR, camera, radar, and IMU, with a strong understanding of how sensor performance influences localization and perception quality.
  • Proven experience in systems engineering for complex hardware and software platforms.
  • Hands on involvement in architecture definition, system integration, or validation of an autonomy or advanced driver assistance platform.
  • Understanding of vehicle level systems and their interaction with the autonomy stack.
  • Experience in safety critical development environments, including at least one of HARA, STPA, FMEA, FTA, or safety concept development.
  • Ability to read C plus plus code and develop Python scripts for analysis, tooling, and test automation.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with ISO 26262, ISO 21448, or comparable safety frameworks.
  • Experience developing formal safety cases or structured safety arguments.
  • Background in simulation environments or hardware in the loop testing for advanced driver assistance or autonomous driving systems.
  • Experience working directly with hardware suppliers on component selection and integration.
  • Hands on experience with requirements definition and traceability management tools such as Jama.
  • Experience applying quantitative risk assessment methodologies.

Why This Work Matters

Autonomous vehicles depend on their ability to sense the environment accurately and respond reliably in complex real world scenarios. The systems you define and validate will determine how confidently the platform can localize itself, interpret surroundings, and operate safely without human input. If you are driven by building rigorous, defensible systems at the frontier of robotics and automotive technology, this role offers the opportunity to shape the sensory foundation of commercial scale autonomy.
