Scientist (Loss modelling: physical risk from weather and climate)
Climate X
About Us
We are a leading global climate risk and analytics provider located in London, UK and New York, US. Earlier this year, we closed Series A led by GV (Google Ventures) and are on a fast trajectory to lead the financial services and asset management industries with our B2E SaaS platform, comprised of three products, Carta, Spectra and Adapt, which resolve customer climate risk challenges across their entire workflows.
We are at a pivotal point in scaling our product offering, expanding our market reach, and refining our product strategy to sustain continued success. We are seeking a VP of Product to join our executive team and drive product innovation, strategy, and execution.
About the role
We are seeking a scientist with a strong background in applied statistics and physical loss modelling, who has specific experience in physical climate/weather risk. This role is ideal for someone experienced with natural catastrophe models and comfortable working with complex and large geospatial and loss datasets. You will be a key contributor to the development, calibration and validation of loss models that support our mission to help clients assess and manage climate risks.
The impact you’ll own
- Loss Model Development: Research and implement loss models that quantify climate-related risks, focusing on robustly estimating asset vulnerabilities.
- Model Calibration & Validation: Calibrate and validate loss models against a wide variety of data sources ensuring they meet rigorous scientific and practical standards.
- Qualitative Validation: Leverage your experience in loss modelling to enhance qualitative validation, particularly in cases where data is limited.
- Framework Development: Contribute to building our overall loss modelling framework, ensuring robustness and adaptability across diverse client requirements and geographies.
Essential Skills
- Experience in weather risk with a strong background in statistics and loss modelling.
- Proficiency working with geospatial data (climate and Earth Observation) and observed or modelled economic damage datasets.
- Prior experience in loss modelling with a focus on validation when data is limited.
- Skilled in model calibration, particularly for loss models and damage curves.
- Strong programming skills in python/R or another language.
- Strong communication skills with ability to explain complex concepts to a non-technical audience.
Desirable Skills
Experience in any one of these areas makes you stand out but are not required for the role and if you are passionate and interested in the role we encourage you to apply!
- Expertise in catastrophe modelling, especially in the physical hazard and vulnerability domain.
- Experience with Bayesian statistics and/or Extreme Value Theory.
- Machine learning knowledge with applications in climate risk assessment.
- Experience with cloud computing (e.g. AWS/Google Cloud)
Qualifications
- PhD or equivalent experience in climate science, hazard modelling, statistical analysis and remote sensing.
- Minimum of 3 years of industry experience in statistical or catastrophe modelling.
