Forest Carbon Data Scientist
Chloris Geospatial
Forest Carbon Data Scientist – Chloris Solutions
About the role
We are seeking an exceptional Carbon Data Scientist to support the delivery of GeoAI-enabled solutions to Chloris’ customers in the forest, land, and agriculture (FLAG) sector. You have training in forest mensuration, forest inventories, or ecosystem science, with hands-on experience in estimating the biomass of woody vegetation with a range of approaches, including from remote sensing. You have training in the use of geographical information systems and earth observations.
You will use your industry knowledge and analytical expertise to provide insights both to clients as part of solution teams and within Chloris by strengthening our products and solutions. You can expect to split your time delivering impact to clients (including travel to client sites when necessary) and building up our solution and product offerings.
As part of the Solutions team, you will work with a global team of analysts and data engineers to design, build, and implement innovative solutions that blend Chloris’ proprietary data, advanced analytics, and GeoAI. You will leverage your creativity and problem-solving skills to respond to the geospatial and sustainability needs of FLAG companies, for their land use emission decarbonization strategy and reporting needs.
Working for a start-up excites you, as does working with demanding customers and meeting their needs on the journey to net-zero and nature-positive. You have a strong business- and service-oriented mindset and are inspired by the opportunity to drive impact in partnership with the customers we serve.
Skills and Qualifications
Required:
- Post-graduate degree in forest sciences, forest resources management, geography/GIS, environmental sciences & engineering or equivalent (or undergraduate degree and additional relevant work experience).
- 3 years of professional experience, ideally in FLAG sector, sustainable supply chains, voluntary carbon markets, or related industries.
- Advanced understanding of forest mensuration, forest inventories, or ecosystem science, with hands-on experience in estimating the biomass of woody vegetation with a range of approaches, including from remote sensing.
- Proficiency with statistical software packages (R preferred) and geographical information systems (QGIS preferred)
- Strong proficiency in Python to develop clean, efficient pipelines and workflows.
- Exceptional analytical skills to interpret complex data and effective communication skills to interact with clients and teams.
- Proven experience in applying data science and statistical techniques to solve real-world problems.
- Willingness to travel (up to 25% of the time).
Preferred:
- Advanced understanding of Land Use, Land-Use Change, and Forestry (LULUCF) carbon accounting, and of sustainable sourcing, deforestation-free supply chains, and other relevant environmental monitoring and reporting frameworks.
- Experience in the design, verification, or validation of forestry projects in the carbon markets; facility with VCM approaches and methodologies; experience in the design and/or implementation of spaceborne remote-sensing solutions for forest carbon baselining and MRV.
- Self-management skills and ability to work as part of an agile team.
