Senior RF Front End Engineer - Lunar Permanence
BLUE ORIGIN
Application close date:
Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. As part of a high-performing team of multi-disciplinary engineers, you will lead the development and optimization of radar systems for Blue Origin’s cutting-edge lunar spacecraft. This role focuses on RF system-level design, modeling, and analysis to enable high-performance radar subsystems that are critical to our lander navigation system performance. By leveraging material properties, geometric constraints, and theoretical system efficiency, your designs will drive the success of state-of-the-art aerospace missions.
We are seeking a highly skilled RF systems expert with a deep understanding of RF subsystems and/or radar architectures, who can drive designs from early concepts to hardware integration. This role focuses primarily on the bigger picture—developing and delivering fully optimized RF system designs fit for space exploration. Passion for our mission and vision is a must, as is a commitment to quality and safe human spaceflight!
If you are passionate about pushing the boundaries of RF system development for space exploration, we encourage you to apply and help us enable humankind’s access to the moon and beyond.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Lead the design and development of RF subsystems, setting performance objectives and delivering integrated solutions that meet radar navigation requirements.
- Define and evaluate RF transmit and receive architectures, select critical RF components (amplifiers, filters, switches, etc.), and guide the system design and PCB layout to achieve optimal signal performance metrics (e.g., gain, noise figure, bandwidth, timing).
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary engineering teams, including peers in navigation and radar, to derive and optimize radar system performance requirements.
- Support the prototyping, testing, and integration of RF subsystems into flight vehicles, ensuring final systems meet mission-critical performance standards.
- Partner with supply chain and manufacturing teams to streamline part selection, system assembly, and testing processes.
- Proactively identify opportunities to improve system performance, expand capabilities, reduce development costs, and speed up production timelines.
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
- 7+ years of experience in RF system design, modeling, and analysis.
- Extensive expertise in RF system development, including design, modeling/simulation, prototyping, testing, and delivery of radar subsystems for aerospace applications.
- Strong knowledge of RF transmit and receive components and concepts such as filters, amplifiers, integrated circuits, and antenna systems.
- Demonstrated experience working across various frequency bands, including L, X, Ku, Ka, and millimeter-wave frequencies.
- Demonstrated experience working with RF modeling, simulation, and layout tools such as HFSS, ADS, Cadence, Altium, etc.
- Ability to challenge conventional designs, break problems down to fundamental elements, and contribute to efficient and sustainable product solutions.
- Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to earn trust and maintain positive working relationships.
Preferred Qualifications:
- M.S. in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with a focus on high-frequency RF system design and optimization.
- Experience designing and optimizing patch array antennas.
- Hands-on experience with space RF hardware development.
- Expertise in RF or radar modeling tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, ANSYS HFSS, and/or FEKO.
