This role is part of the Lunar Transportation business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

The Manager for Zero Boil Off’s Avionics and Motor Control team is responsible for planning, setting standards within the technical team and guiding a team of high performing avionics engineers. This role works with direct and matrixed resources to ensure the avionics for the zero boil off cryocooler are developed within technical, cost and schedule constraints. This includes flight software, avionics hardware, hardware-in-loop (HIL), and development of very high speed gas bearing motor controllers. The Zero Boil Off Cryocooler enables Blue Origin to make Hydrogen a storeable propellant and enables a permanent lunar presence.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with your team and matrixed resources to deliver the avionics sub-system to the cryocooler. This includes requirements development, verification planning and execution, lab leadership, design etc.

  • Develop and own high and low voltage, avionic designs that interact with electrical power consumers.

  • Support design risk analyses, failure modes effects and criticality analyses (FMECA), design for test/manufacture/cost (DFx), and root-cause analysis of test discrepancies.

  • Participate in program level technology development, mission assurance and safety initiatives, and avionics development process improvements.

  • Effectively communicate development status, risks, and challenges to management.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, or related disciplines

  • A breadth of understanding in electronics hardware development such as developing high voltage switching, high voltage and power regulation, or other advanced electronic commercial or aerospace products

  • Experience with analog, digital or mixed-signal circuit design, including analysis, simulation, test, troubleshooting, and part selection

  • Knowledge of signal integrity, power, grounding, and general board layout principles

  • Brushless DC (BLDC) motor control experience

  • Demonstrated experience designing high reliability safety-critical, Class 2/3 board assemblies; familiarity with IPC-A-600/610, DO-254 and similar standards

  • Familiar with many of the following parts and their usage: ADCs, DACs, OpAmps, power supplies (linear, LDO, DC/DC), processors, and MOSFETs

  • Knowledge of common communication methods, such as RS232, RS422, I2C, SPI, LVDS, Ethernet, CAN, or PCIe

  • Desire to work hands-on, both independently and as part of a team, throughout the development and production phases of the electronic assembly product lifecycle

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and supply to a culture of collaboration

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Desired:

  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, or related disciplines

  • Successful Candidates typically have 8+ years of experience in design, development, test, and operation of vehicle Avionics systems

  • Basic or better knowledge of radiation effects on electronics and how to apply this to designs targeting space applications

  • Experience with motor controls, various power conversion topologies, and control systems

  • Experience with launch vehicle Avionics systems hardware development, integration, and test

  • Electrical Design and Analysis tools: LTSpice, PSpice, SIMetrix/SIMPLIS, Simscape


Compensation Range for:

CO applicants is $153,636.00-$215,090.40;WA applicants is $167,088.00-$233,923.20
