We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

We are a diverse team of collaborators, doers, and problem- solvers who are relentlessly committed to a culture of safety. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable space flight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling Blue Origin’s vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

As a Senior Turbomachinery Secondary Flows Analysis Engineer, you will work on the Engines Thermal Analysis team among other experts in heat transfer and 1d flow network modeling. As part of this passionate and accomplished group of engineers, you will directly contribute to the design and qualification of the most advanced liquid rocket engines being developed today. You will participate in all stages of rocket engine development, from concept through detailed design and test support.

As an experienced practitioner of 1d flow network modeling, you will be responsible for quantifying the thermodynamic state and flow rate of all fluids on the turbopump. You will generate, maintain, and document secondary flow network analyses of whole turbopump assemblies, including through rotor-stator cavities and seal assemblies. You will assist the thermal analysts in predicting the thermal states of turbomachinery components and assemblies through transient missions. You will design and analyze robust rotor axial thrust management systems. Relying on your fundamentals in fluid mechanics, you will anchor flow network models to test data and make recommendations for updated instrumentation suites on subsequent test campaigns.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and analysis of turbomachinery secondary flows systems at varying levels of maturity and detail

  • Meticulous bookkeeping of model status and changes through time

  • Defining and anchoring predictions of secondary flow temperatures, pressures, and vapor quality to test data

  • Developing novel methods and processes that will improve component and analysis performance and reliability

  • Technical and career mentorship of less experienced engineers

  • Peer review of secondary flow analyses on all of Blue Origin’s active engine programs

  • Performing thermal analyses on rocket engine hardware as necessary

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline is required

  • Minimum of 10 years of industry experience working directly with 1-d flow modeling, preferably in a turbomachinery context

  • Solid understanding of fluid flow, heat transfer, and thermodynamic first principles

  • Good communication skills and proficiency with productivity tools

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or higher) in an engineering discipline with a focus on thermal or fluid sciences

  • Experience with using Sinda/Fluint or Flownex flow network software to analyze turbomachinery systems such as blade and vane passages or film cooling, combustor cooling designs, or disk cavities

  • Experience programming in Fortran, VBA, or Python

  • Prior job experience in thermal/fluid testing and instrumentation specification

  • Experience with ANSYS Classic and Workbench for thermal analysis

  • Demonstrated knowledge surrounding cryogens and phase change heat transfer
