Mechanical Systems Engineer III - New Glenn Launch Vehicle Umbilical

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.
As part of a small, hard-working, and accomplished team of experts you will lead the design, development, and test of launch vehicle Umbilical Systems for various spaceflight systems. You will share toward the team’s impact on all aspects of fluid and mechanical design, operation, and project management. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedication and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities:
Apply engineering techniques and judgement to develop, integrate, design, manufacture, install and sustain launch vehicle Umbilical System in close collaboration with peer systems on vehicle and ground.
Lead or own the1 of 1 entire development cycle of flight hardware, including conceptual and detailed design, trade studies, structural analysis, development testing, and qualification.
Produce high quality engineering artifacts across the product life cycle to facilitate system fabrication, installation, testing and operations, including interface documents, system schematics, subsystem or component specifications, component drawings, assembly drawings, and installation drawings, engineering operations requirements, etc.
Develop test plan of development, production and flight hardware. Participate in subsystem level testing including planning, execution, data reduction and analysis. Develop component specifications and lead suppliers.
Leverage experience and engineering judgement to rapidly design and produce non-flight, proof of concept hardware for fast paced research and development projects Ability to participate in a small, agile team to build and adapt to frequently shifting priorities.
Lead root cause investigation on equipment or test failures to solution implementation.
Apply Project Management skills in coordinating and managing engineering development activities working collaboratively with multi-functional teams.
Support production and operations as engineering subject matter expert, may require travel to production and operation facilities.
Eager to learn and collaborate across Blue Origin to leverage the skills of the organization, incorporate lessons learned, and challenge requirements.
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical, Structural, or Aerospace Engineering (or similar discipline)
5+ years of experience designing aerospace or equivalent type mechanical system elements within aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicles using metallic and/or composite materials, manufacturing processes, and assembly methods.
Strong mechanical design, integration, and mechanism analysis skills using 3D modeling and simulation tools (CREO/ANSYS preferred).
Proven familiarity with data reduction and analysis (MATLAB or similar)
Experience with design/analysis for Thermal/Radiation Natural Environments and Shock/Vibration multifaceted environments is a plus.
Experience with GD&T analysis and application (ASME Y14.5) and performing tolerance stacks.
Experience in design for manufacturing, assembly, and integration with knowledge of mass & cost optimization and designing with the entirety of the project life cycle in mind.
Proficient in technical writing, presenting sophisticated ideas clearly and concisely.
Experience with qualification testing and specifying and justifying margins and test sequences for aerospace systems.
Familiarity applying Systems Engineering and Project Management practices to Product Development Lifecycles
Ability to work in a team environment, earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and supply to a culture of inclusion.

10 to 15% travel may be required
Compensation Range for:
WA applicants is $111,690.00-$156,366.00Other site ranges may differ
