This role is part of the New Shepard program. New Shepard is a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Kármán line – the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space.

As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team, you will oversee and supervise the men and women who maintain, repair and operate the West Texas New Shepard Launch Complex and Vehicle maintenance Ground equipment. By leading this highly skilled team of technicians, this position will directly influence the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight. Van Horn Specific information

Being at the heart of Blue Origin operations, the West Texas Site in Van Horn, TX offers eligible employee’s additional attractive financial incentives to supplement their competitive base earnings, including a living allowance and relocation assistance. Eligibility for these additional benefits is based on the employee’s ability to permanently relocate to Van Horn, TX, or travel to Van Horn from another Blue location a minimum of 50% of the time.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with Ground Engineering Managers to execute the daily schedule based on the two week forecast and launch schedule.
  • Attend the pre-shift briefing, provide inputs, and align skills to complete daily tasks.
  • Re-schedule or plan for recovery of items not completed in the daily assignment.
  • Delegate the daily tasks to technicians given their experience and technical levels.
  • Ensure team is properly staffed for daily operations.
  • Perform beginning, middle, and end of shift stand walk-downs and worksite check-ins.
  • Monitor FOD Control and Tool Control within the LLCX and workshop to maintain a clean, organized, and presentable work center.
  • Provide technical input to technicians as needed.
  • Administrative duties will include approval of time cards, tracking of time, and personnel scheduling.
  • Complete performance reviews of technicians and attend interview of prospective employees.
  • Monitor continued training and skills development for team members.
  • Work with engineers for improvements and enhanced methods and development. Ensure engineering instructions are correct for safe operation for technicians performing the work
  • Safely work around cryogens, hazardous chemicals, and high pressure systems.
  • Oversee technicians provide the proper guidance to ensure safe operations at the facility.
  • Other duties as assigned or otherwise beneficial to fulfil test and operations.
  • Monitor team purchases for budget management
  • Maintain the highest standards and work practices for all work being performed

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands on experience in military or civil aviation, aerospace, test operations or launch vehicle operations.
  • 2+ years in a supervisory or lead role
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and work directly with technicians.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to the teams culture
  • Experience in build, fabrication, or alterations of launch or test facilities.
  • Ability to closely follow P&ID drawings and with placing components.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Proficient computer skills and MS Office
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Preferred Qualifications

  • 15+ years of hands on experience in military or civil aviation, aerospace, test operations or launch vehicle operations.
  • 5+ years as a lead person or supervisor
  • Exceptional organizational and analytical skills
  • Broad scheduling and planning skillset
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proven ability to drive complex projects with minimal oversight.
  • Two year technical or AS degree.
  • A continuous improvement mindset with ability to recommend solutions to help develop effective maintenance, integration and testing procedures.
