This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of engineers, you will be responsible for supporting the Dust Mitigation team in activities such as risk identification and mitigation, selection of mitigation hardware and technologies, and interaction with industry labs and experts working to protect both crew and assets from the impacts of lunar dust. The Lunar Dust Mitigation team interacts with all product teams that have hardware going to the moon. The team is responsible for supporting the identification of potential dust risks and failures points, selecting mitigation approaches, and working with the design teams to mature hardware to be ready to handle the dusty environment of the moon.

You will work directly with NASA and our National Team Partners as part of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program. You will play a key role in developing the Lunar Transportation system that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond the bounds of Earth.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with various product teams to identify dust mitigation needs and potential hazards.
  • Support development of Lunar Dust related requirements for hardware / component design.
  • Work effectively with a cross-disciplinary team of engineers and technicians to fabricate and perform development tests and analyses to inform design and hardware decisions within defined schedule and budget constraints.
  • Lead or support effort to select mitigation hardware, technologies, or strategies.
  • Lead or support effort to mature dust mitigation hardware and coordinate with teams to ensure seamless integration.
  • Lead or support modelling and analysis efforts to observe lunar dust transport and system impacts.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in Systems, Aerospace, Mechanical engineering, or related field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of systems engineering activities including requirements, verification activities, risk mitigation strategies, scheduling and project management.
  • Familiarity and experience with hands-on prototyping and design, experiment design, test methods, and general laboratory skills.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a fast paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communication skills.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. or PhD in a related field.
  • Experience with spacecraft mitigation designs against lunar dust.
  • Experience working on space or aerospace engineering projects.
  • Knowledge of optical, electrical, or physical properties of lunar regolith.
  • Knowledge of aerosols, aerosol physics, particle transport.
  • Modelling experience such as CFD or parametric models using Simscape, Matlab or similar programs.

Compensation range for on-site CO applicants is $88,440-$117,920

Compensation range for on-site WA applicants is $96,480-$128,640
