At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit.

As a Special Programs Senior Mission Design Analyst, you will work in our Seattle location and perform mission and trajectory design and analysis to support proposal capture and program execution of vital U.S. government space programs. You will also perform systems engineering duties as needed. National Security Space is a new and rapidly-growing market for Blue Ring. You will be joining a small, specialized team focused on executing the delivery of this needed space mobility capability to the government. Blue Ring possesses an unprecedented amount of delta-v from chemical and electric propulsion, and you will be responsible for a broad range of mission analysis tasks that leverage these capabilities.

Special Mentions:

  • Relocation provided (must relocate to Seattle)
  • Travel expected up to 20% of the time
  • Multiple positions available (different levels)

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • You will be expected to work on Blue Ring mission applications through the entire mission lifecycle, including the initial proposal stages through live operations as needed.
  • Leverage Blue Ring’s unprecedented hybrid delta-v capabilities to design and analyze missions that span a variety of orbital destinations.
  • Run internally-developed mission design and navigation analysis tools and interface with the development team to add features as needs arise.
  • Maintain awareness of overall system engineering and assist in development of mission architecture
  • When needed, take ownership of the work of a small mission design team and provide systems engineering leadership.
  • Distill your work and results at an appropriate level for effective communication with government sponsors.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
  • 10 or more years of proven experience focused on trajectory analysis, flight dynamics, or mission design
  • Strong fundamentals in orbital mechanics and astrodynamics
  • Understanding of ground-based satellite navigation and statistical orbit determination
  • Applied experience using mission design and trajectory optimization tools such as Monte, Copernicus, or STK/ODTK.
  • Experience in writing necessary analysis scripts in at least one of the following languages: Julia, Python, C++, or MATLAB
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Active or ability to acquire/renew Top Secret (TS) / Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) security clearance with Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) with polygraph

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
  • Significant experience using mission design and trajectory optimization tools such as Monte, Copernicus, or STK/ODTK.
  • Theoretical knowledge in trajectory design and optimization algorithms, particularly for low-thrust systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the mission design lifecycle from conceptualization through operational flight
  • Significant experience in mission and trajectory analysis (e.g. coverage analyses, link budgets, etc.)
  • Applied expertise in the ground-based satellite navigation and statistical orbit determination processes
  • Multi-disciplinary spacecraft subsystem analysis expertise (power, propulsion, telecommunications)
  • Familiarity with U.S. government space systems and long-term acquisition strategy.
  • Active Top Secret (TS) / Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) security clearance with Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) with polygraph.
