This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers you will be the Lunar Lander Leg Drop Senior Test Engineer for our Lunar Permanence Assembly, Integration, and Test team. As part of your role, you will mentor & train other team members. You will provide technical leadership to the team, supporting members of your team, advising on technical approaches, and bringing your experience to bear on our most challenging technical problems in our Landing Leg systems.

You will work with our mechanisms team to help architect the test plans, procedures, test setup, tooling/test article builds to perform development testing for use on our lunar family of vehicles to certify the design for flight. This role will include the complete life cycle of the system from definition, interfaces, conceptual design, detailed design, component development, assembly, verification, and operation. You will plan out and manager your test schedules, manage risks, and develop mitigation plans for your hardware and test operations. You will work with both internal and external suppliers to design, build, test, and analyze components that will take us to the moon!

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Plan and develop test plans and procedures for vehicle level development and qualification testing.
  • Lead and execute test plans and procedures as part of an integrated test team.
  • Lead daily test operations, operate test consoles, direct technician work and coordinate with internal customers.
  • Apply direct experience to component or integrated vehicle test planning and execution of structural, mechanical drop testing, or equivalent.
  • Develop requirements and plans for instrumentation, Data Acquisition and Control Systems needed for testing.
  • Work with the design and systems engineers to plan tests of the vehicle level and subsystems, ensuring the tests are designed to verify the pertinent requirements.
  • Design, procure, and manage build of test support equipment; manage vendors and subcontractors during build and installation.
  • Troubleshoot issues that arise during testing.
  • Reduce, analyze, and archive test data to support verification tasks.
  • Perform root cause, system hazard analysis and failure investigations.
  • Find opportunities for safety improvements and cost savings.
  • Proactively prepare status updates and communicates both within the organization and with direct customers.
  • Have frequent inter-organizational and customer interactions on difficult technical issues.
  • Work independently to determine and develop approaches to solutions.
  • Participate in test readiness review, pre and post-test briefings, and post-test reviews.
  • Manage procedural redlines and updates during test campaigns.
  • Lead and coordinate test crews, support equipment and vehicle configurations for testing.
  • Enforce safety policies during test planning and operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Aerospace, Mechanical, Physics, Systems Engineering or related technical subject area.
  • 8+ years of experience in testing mechanical systems/components or related area.
  • Experience developing, integrating, and certifying structural test article systems for ground operations and flight.
  • Experience providing technical leadership and mentoring to small teams of early to mid-career engineers.
  • Excellent fundamental understanding of mechanical testing methodology
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and graphical communication skills with ability to directly interface with external parties including government and commercial entities.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
  • Willingness to work on-site at Florida's Space Coast with occasional travel to support testing as necessary.

Desired Qualifications

  • M.S. in Aerospace, Mechanical, Physics, Systems Engineering or related technical subject area.
  • Systems Engineering experience, specifically requirements and interface definition, management, and verification.
  • Experience with spacecraft propulsion and Structural Test Article operations

  • Travel expected up to 25% of the time with some long duration during major assembly tests at Test Facilities
  • Shifts available: 1st with additional support as needed.
  • Interviews will include a technical assessment
