This role is part of Enterprise Technology (ET), where we’re developing the digital infrastructure needed to build the road to space, with an emphasis on digital capabilities required to advance Blue Origin’s mission. Enterprise Technology is the center of excellence for digital technology at Blue Origin, providing oversight and governance to align technology and business strategies.

In this role, you will be responsible for managing the Data Science and Machine Learning Platform that enables the use of data in decision-making across the company from engineering to flight operations and more. This position will be responsible for developing the roadmap and implementing the functionality to allow embedded Data Scientists, ML practitioners, and advanced analytics users to develop, train, validate, and deploy AI, ML, and general Data Science models in the cloud, at the edge and on hardware.

This position requires a technical leader with the ability to lead technical teams, set strategic direction, and own the tactical implementation of that roadmap in partnership with sister teams and customers. Experience building event-driven systems optimized for driving insights from data across the company, stored in different formats, at scale, securely in a cloud environment at the edge, and on hardware is critical.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and mentor a small but growing team of DS and ML practitioners to build tooling and functionality to reduce the cycle time of model development for downstream users
  • Passionate about data quality and trust
  • Help us define and implement our advanced analytics technology roadmap and technical capabilities
  • Work with practitioners and customers to develop novel ML/AI solutions to complex problems across manufacturing, design, and mission operations
  • Define and manage incident management, customer communications, and RCAs and implement mitigation strategies for platform outages
  • Conduct make vs buy decisions for new technology and conduct vendor assessments when needed to augment and improve the platform
  • Be a center of excellence for the Data Science, ML, and AI practices at Blue Origin
  • Work with Data Governance and Cyber Security to ensure models are implemented in a secure and ethical manner
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on the performance of the platform, identifying areas for improvement and making data-driven decisions to optimize the platform's performance and return on investment.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience writing production-grade code in a modern programming language
  • 3+ years of people management experience
  • Experience having built part of a modern data science stack, from design to production code
  • Experience hiring top talent and driving career growth for early-in-career and senior engineers
  • The ability to set ambitious goals with measurable results and familiarity with frameworks such as OKRs
  • A proven track record of delivering complex, large-scale projects
  • Experience working with product managers to collaboratively set a vision
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Deep technical knowledge about one or more of Spark, Databricks, ML Flow, or similar technologies
  • Clear understanding of the software development lifecycle from reviewing requirements to debugging sophisticated systems in production
  • Experience maintaining and operating always-on cloud services
  • Comfortable diving into the code with your team when the situation calls for it
  • Experience with AWS, data engineering, data modeling, and data quality
  • Experience working with APIs and Cloud-based data platform implementations including Observability & Monitoring, data cataloging, metadata management, and Security & governance needs
  • Ability to lead product roll-out process from conception through final operationalization
