BLUE ORIGIN

Seattle, WA, USA
Posted on Monday, September 18, 2023

We are a diverse team of collaborators, doers, and problem-solvers who are relentlessly committed to a culture of safety. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable space flight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling Blue Origin’s vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth.

As part of an innovative team of engineers, you will impact the development and maturation of Liquid Propulsion Rocket Engine (LPRE) control algorithms and simulation models. As a Control & System Analysis (CSA) engineer, your input and guidance will affect LPRE control system design at all stages of the development lifecycle. Ability to interface and coordinate resources with engine controller hardware, engine controller software, hardware in the loop (HIL), and vehicle control/simulation teams is imperative. You will perform engine transient analyses to determine compliance to performance requirements. An insistence on high standards is required to improve engine control system models based on system performance, mission requirements, program targets and constraints. Additional responsibilities include the establishment of processes and standard methodologies for transient model development and analysis methods, and the continuous improvement of analytical capabilities and tools. There will be opportunities for contribution to engine control and system analysis technology roadmap and strategy formulation, as well as technical and professional mentorship for junior team members.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership experience, and dedication to excellence to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in relevant engineering subject area (aerospace, mechanical, electrical, physics or software desired)

  • 2+ years of experience in transient system modeling of engineering systems

  • Demonstrated proficiency of linear control theory fundamentals as well as control system principles

  • Familiarity with thermodynamic, mechanical, and fluid systems

  • Proficiency in programming and knowledge of at least one programming/scripting language (Python/MATLAB/Simulink/C++)

  • Basic understanding of numerical methods

  • Interpersonal skills and proven track record to work on a team

  • Ability to learn and work with technical guidance on engine modeling, simulation and control system analysis tasks, and balance several tasks at one time

  • Ability to clearly communicate technical analysis results to other teams and leadership

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and strengthen our ethos of inclusion

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

  • Familiarity with LPRE control system(s) preferred

  • Graduate level engineering degree in relevant engineering subject area

  • Experience with advanced control strategies (e.g. robust control, model predictive control, optimal control, adaptive control)

  • Basic project management skills

  • Basic configuration management experience

  • Basic version control software experience

  • Familiarity with simulation tools such as Simulink and MATLAB
