Team Leader – Backend
Position overview:
As the Team Leader – Backend, you’re a key member of the Shift Operations Team, reporting to the Shift Manager You will contribute to the success of Ball by focusing on operation, process and maintenance issues of backend and take corrective actions on time during the shift. You will plan your shift team resources (Production Associates) and allocate them to focus on Daily operation, Periodic Inspection and maintenance, Predictive and Corrective Maintenance activities in the area. You will gain mastery in Process troubleshooting and maintenance of Sprays, Necker, Palletizer, Strapper & Wrapper, train the team and get the best out of them. You will act as a link between Shift Manager, Backend specialist, Maintenance supervisor, toolroom, maintenance engineers, Electrical engineers, spareparts stores and co-ordinate all the activities of Maintenance, improvements, TPM, 5’s activities in the area. You will strive hard to achieve area KPI’s through collaboration, teamwork and planning. You will play key role in size changeovers and achieve best in class changeover time in the area.
Your key responsibilities include:
Responsible of smooth operation of backend Equipment. He will ensure his area equipment are utilized and operated to their optimum speed and efficiency.
• Ensure Daily Safety checks are completed for the equipment within first two hours of shift. Ensure actions are taken on time to close the deviation.
• Ensure daily Operation / Maintenance checks are done in the area and corrective actions are taken on time. If any support is needed, ensure to escalate to proper level and close the open items.
• Ensure the cans produced meet all quality specification. Ensure Quality checks are completed and corrective actions are taken on time for any deviation.
• Ensure his area and area Equipment are maintained in accordance with housekeeping and hygiene standard. Ensure Housekeeping is maintained during shift hours and handover the shift with good housekeeping.
• Beginning of shift take the handover from the outgoing shift backend team leader, understand the issues in the area, and plan follow up / support needed from his team and engineering resources. Ensure to receive the area with proper housekeeping, all scrap bin cleared and scrap is counted.
• Responsible for his area spoilage target. Ensure to address the spoilage concerns (tipped cans / Jams at Necker infeed, spray machines / fallen cans in ovens, palletizer, etc) and take swift action to get the abnormal condition back on track.
• Responsible for area KPI’s such as downtime, Spoilage, HFI’s. Ensure to check process and can parameters are within specification. Troubleshoot equipment for process issues and seek help if needed from Engineering.
• Safety: Near miss reporting. Attends all safety trainings. Part of plant emergency management team. Can manage emergencies and act as key resource in shift for plant evacuation for fire alarm or other Emergency situations.
• Responsible for CCP in the area - curing of can and mixed lables. Follow Quality assurance procedure as specified.
• Gain Mastery and Execute line clearance after lable change with SMED concept. Ensure the lable change is done with least spoilage from end of lable pallet ensure no mixed lables.
• Gain Mastery in vision Camera system set up.
• Utilize the opportunities (Standby time or any other natural downtime) to plan for cleaning and Corrective maintenance activity in sprays and Neckers.
• Responsible for all the standard and special tools for his shift. Ensures effective utilization of tools and tackles and prevent misuse of same.
• Work closely with engineering resource and allocate his team resources for proper Maintenance and up-keeping of the equipment.
• Understand solid waste management system. Ensure all the waste generated in the area (Spray dust, Lacquer semi liquid / Liquid waste) are segregated / handled and disposed-off according to the system.
• Responsible for proper usage of Flammable liquids in the area. Ensure cleaning aids and rags and prepared, handled, stored and disposed-off properly.
• Actively participate in Continuous Improvement initiatives e.g. Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, SMED, 5S, ISO, etc. Conduct lean manufacturing activities and participate in audits as per company requirements. Attend area team meetings on periodical basis. Drives area improvement agenda based on meeting outcomes.
• Gain mastery in periodic maintenance of his area Equipment. Support engineering resources for periodic maintenance.
• Gain mastery in oven cleaning, Support Engineering team for oven cleaning activities.
• Gain Mastery in Neckers – Timing set up, Pin height set up, Reformer diameter and depth adjustment, Waxer lube set up, Flanger set up.
• Understand Light tester set up and calibration. Periodically test light tester for rejection of defective cans
• Gain mastery in audit set up of Spray machines and ovens. Understand Gun angle, pressure set up, film weight distribution, Datapaq usage.
• Work closely with engineering resources for changeover activities. Work on achieving quick changeovers.
• Ensure Team leader / Area log book is updated. Note down the corrective action taken in the shift and action list for the support needed from engineering resources to action upon.
• Responsible for lacquer consumption in his shift. Maintain optimum film weight throughout the shift to get the consumption numbers at target. Take corrective actions for deviations.
• Responsible for corrective Maintenance for his area equipment during his shift, either attend personally or allocates resources, and get the equipment back in operation with least possible downtime.
• Gives input for spareparts stores / backend engineering resources for consumables, machine spares and tools consumption and help achieve maintenance spending target.
• Follows and maintain organization’s SOPs and safe working practices. Comply with any legal, environmental and safety, BRC requirements and/or checks.
Experience and skills required:
- 4 Years of Operation / Maintenance Experience in medium/large scale containing High speed packing lines, Ovens, Dust collectors, palletizers, conveying and imported manufacturing equipment.
- • Hands on experience in maintenance and troubleshooting of positive displacement pumps, Gearboxes, Complex assemblies.
• Experience in maintenance of any Gas fired Equipment – Boilers, Ovens, and Driers.
Education/qualifications
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering / Electrical Engineering / Tooling
Soft and hard skills
Must be able to work shifts and able to work extended hours on occasions when required.
• Computer literacy and the ability to generate reports. Ability to read, understand and develop engineering drawings.
• Analytical skills to interpret numerical data.
• Working knowledge of Health and Safety work practices. Must be able to handle Flammable, and combustible substances.
