AST SpaceMobile is building the first and only global cellular broadband network in space to operate directly with standard, unmodified mobile devices based on our extensive IP and patent portfolio and designed for both commercial and government applications. Our engineers and space scientists are on a mission to eliminate the connectivity gaps faced by today’s five billion mobile subscribers and finally bring broadband to the billions who remain unconnected.

SUMMARY:

The Mechanical Engineer – Test, Tooling & Automation is responsible for the design, development, and deployment of test equipment, tooling systems, and automated manufacturing solutions. This role requires a hands-on engineer with strong expertise in mechanical design, prototyping, instrumentation, and system integration (PLC, DAQ, robotics).

The engineer will support production ramps, assembly integration, and test validation by delivering robust, reliable hardware solutions while working closely with cross-functional teams.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design and develop tooling, fixtures, and test equipment for manufacturing and integration processes.
  • Lead 3D prototyping (additive manufacturing) and rapid design iterations to support production needs.
  • Develop and maintain test systems including DAQ, instrumentation, and data acquisition workflows.
  • Integrate PLC systems, sensors, actuators, and control systems into test setups.
  • Support robotics and automation systems for manufacturing and assembly operations.
  • Execute functional testing, validation, and certification of hardware systems.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and system-level issues in test environments.
  • Define and document test procedures, work instructions, and configuration standards.
  • Collaborate with electrical, software, and manufacturing teams for system integration and commissioning.
  • Ensure test racks, tooling, and systems meet safety, quality, and reliability standards.
  • Support production ramp activities by ensuring readiness of tools, test equipment, and trained personnel.
  • Provide hands-on support on the floor, including building, debug, and problem resolution.
  • Continuously improving tooling and test processes to increase efficiency and reduce downtime.
